I have recently learned that my gGrandfather, JOSEPH NEWEY (b. 1846 in Dudley) 'may perhaps' have been knighted in 1899-1900 by Queen Victoria. I do not know where I can find verification. None of the surviving family in South Africa know anything of this. He was a pioneer bridge builder out her in the early days of the Cape Colony and rose to head up the Works Department of the Colony. He arrived in the Cape in about 1874 and died on his sheep farm in British Kaffraria (Cape Colony) in 1907. |
