Daughter and family live in Nova Scotia, and will be feeling the effects of Hurricane Fiona tonight ........... the eye of what is expected to be a category 2 hurricane will pass over the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia, but all parts will be affected by the outer edges of the hurricane experiencing extreme winds, between 120-150 kph..

They had been experiencing very heavy rain from early Friday morning, the extreme outer edges of the hurricane.

It will blow through the eastern coast of New Brunswick, hit PEI and then swing over past Newfoundland.

It is likely to be the worst storm to hit so far north in recorded memory.

Daughter and family are hunkered down, everything that could be moved from outside has been removed or tied down very tightly, fridge and freezers wrapped in blankets and other covers to keep as cold as possible, supplies enough for 3 days, candles etc for light. They were expecting the power to go off by early evening there. Cell towers have been blown down in previous big storms, and of course land lines could also be out.

Luckily it isn't too cold, so they should be warm enough

It sounds as if they have done everything possible to prepare for any effects of the storm.
I do hope all will be well for that area at this worrying time.

Looks like the worse should be over for her now Sylvia, almost certainly lost power most of the East coast has.
As you say thank goodness it's not too cold.
Fingers crossed no damage to their home.

Thank you all for your words.

Sorry you also have worries, LondonBelle.

One good thing ........... Maritimers are somewhat used to being on the tail end of hurricanes, and of the bad winter nor'easters. They really do know what to do (except for newcomers who've never experienced it, they soon learn!!)

Daughter phoned about 25 minutes ago, about 4:10 pm her time. That would be about 8:10 pm UK)

VERY bad connections, she tried 3 or 4 times, but I managed to gather that the 3 of them plus dog are all fine. and I THINK I heard her answer YES to my question "and the houses is alright?".

Damage is bad, power out to most of the Maritimes, including PEI (sorry LondonBelle) and it could be days for everyone to be reconnected. Lots of trees downed and damage to houses.

Fiona is now hitting Newfoundland with high water surges along the coast there.

It is worrying, but we have to wait until she gets another connection, outsiders have to wait as us trying to phone them just causes more and more havoc by blocking the few lines available.

At least they are safe, and we know they will be well prepared for living 3 or 4 days without power etc.

They do have a gas BBQ on the patio, so if that is still operative, they will even be able to have hot food.

So pleased to hear that you have been able to make contact with your daughter Sylvia and they are ok <3

Thanks for giving me some information from those in the region

I still haven't heard anything from PEI but seeing the pictures it looks like Fiona has left a trail of devastation in and around Charlottetown where the majority of the family live :-(

My daughter phoned about 90 minutes ago.

They have phone (intermittently, it dropped out once during our call), cell phone and email connection, and the power came on at their house about 9 am this morning (their time).

No apparent damage to their house, some tree branches spread around the garden, but some large older trees further down their street have lost very large branches.

They've been very lucky.

They haven't been out "gawking" so no idea how much damage elsewhere. All schools and many work places are closed tomorrow. Daughter had a meeting planned for tomorrow, and they'll go back to Zoom.

Cape Breton was very badly hit, maybe the worst damage.

LondonBelle ....... I haven't heard much about PEI, so hope that your relatives are all safe, and that you hear from them soon.
