Very good but the surgeons of old were stupid. They didn't want a specialist surgeon just for orthopaedics as it looked they couldn't cope with fractures and breaks. The truth was a junior doctor tried to deal with them without much training and many people were crippled and lost limbs as it wasn't seen as a very important area of medicine. It took to the early 1950s before it was recognised and an orthopaedic surgeon dealt with bones :-0

In 1905, the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital amalgamated with the National Orthopaedic Hospital and became the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

Many soldiers died early WW1 because they used the wrong splint so the bones rubbed together and the men bled to death or it wasn't seen as important to get them to an operating table quickly and many died or lost limbs due to infection.

A few orthopaedic surgeons managed to get things changed so figures improved quickly but still didn't help after WW1 was over.
