What ID do you think they would have in 1939 before they got their ID cards, It's possible some had alien papers.

Names, areas and an honest answer may have sufficed.

It couldn't have been much of a flaw as they interned many and spying was very limited.

Needing to identify yourself for banks etc is a very modern thing.

I carried an ID for over 5 years in the late 1960s to early 1970s and I now have one for here. Cuts out a lot of bother.

ArgyllGran, no she wasn't interned! :-) however i was just trying to point out the simple floor in NOT asking for some form of ID

They wouldn't know who was an "alien" from the 1939 Register, but would have had the info from other sources.

Are you saying she was interned although Irish?

thanks for your replies folks, so she might not have needed anything to prove her ID? so how did they know who was italian?
by the way, edited to say she was born in ireland
oh, by the way andysmum, i realise that 10 months is not imposable but the DOB in the baptism is october ;-(

Don’t forget, Pat, that GRO birth registrations give the mothers’ maiden names. If that space is left blank it is usually an indicator that the child was born illegitimately.

They didn't need to identify themselves at the time of the register.

Have you looked for her birth registration. If you know her mother's maiden name it helps as GRO have the maiden names prior to 1911. You can use GRO (Search the GRO Online Index section) to find her. You will be able to order a £7.00 PDF if you want confirmation it is her.

If you are not already registered on GRO do so as it's free and they are much cheaper to buy your BMD certs. from rather than the family history companies.

If you don't know her mother's maiden name find her on censuses and see the names of the father and mother and try to find their wedding as it could give you the mother's maiden name.

As I understand it, everyone had to go to their local register office and give full details of their whole family, in order to get a ration book. The information is whatever the family said at the time, although I suppose the clerk taking down the details might have made a mistake.

Also, there is no reason why your grandmother couldn't have been born in February and not christened until November.

hi all. just thought i'd ask, some one out there might know the answer!1
1st some back ground:-my grand mother gave a date of birth in 1939 as feb '78, but what looks like the only real christening record i can find is nov '78 and, according to her wedding cert, she was 29 in '09!!
now my question!
and she was born in ireland!!
???does any one know what evidence/proof/or information was used to identify people in this survey?
