Wondering if any could please try to see if they can find any more about Heinz.

What I know from FMP and Ancestry:

He was born on 10 July 1923 in Berlin.

There is a home office document dated 4 Dec 1939 entitled ‘Male Enemy Alien Exemption from Internment - Refugee’. It says he is a student residing at Barham House, Clayton, Suffolk. (There is a handwritten note at the top of this document that says ‘Served with thr Pioneer Corps - 25.5:43.

Barham House for Refugees was acquired by the Movement for the Care of Children from Germany - a hostel for refugee boys.

In 1941 he was working at his Uncle’’s knitwear factory at the Grasslt Factory Estate in MaryPort Cumbria. This factory was established in 1939 by a manufacturer from Berlin. of knitted woollen wear.

There is a 1947 electoral roll record showing him living at 47 Abbot’s Place, Aberdare Gardens, Camden. On the 1948 record it looks like he has changed his name to Henry E Rath.

Can anyone find anything else please?
How would I find out the name and proprietor of the knitwear factory?
How would I find anything on his military service?

Thank you

I don't understand the dates?

Born 1939 then working 1941 and a little later in Pioneer Corps?

He wouldn't feature on an electoral list in 1947 either.

Please will you check and come back to us.?

It seems that the Pioneer Corps records are held at Kew. You can Google as I did.

They can only be viewed at Kew.

You said it was his Uncle’s factory so why are you looking for the owners?

Edit: Do you mean Glasson?

I think the year of birth is 1923 ie 10 July 1923, Berlin, that is according to his to Refugee document.

Gwyn in Kent - don’t think so as I found him on the 1947 electoral roll.

Namelessone - Thanks will look into Kew. We don’t know the name/surname of his Uncle.

Thanks

Re the factory. Leicester uni have the collection of historical directories - l’ m on my iPad so you will have to Google. Local history centres ,local archives and newspapers are a good source of information.

The National Archives have his Naturalisation Certificate as follows. That might account why he changed his name between 1947/48. I have no idea what information you would get from the Certificate.

Catalogue description Naturalisation Certificate: Heinz Israel Rath. From Germany. Resident in London....

LondonBelle - you’re amazing! Thank you!

Just looked on the National Archives and there is a document showing what would be on the Naturization Certificate and it will show his parents details too.

I now have a copy of his oath of allegiance and his naturalisation document.

It lists his father as Norbert Rath and mother as Netty Rath her maiden name was Spiegelmann

On holocaust registers I found Norbert was born 19 09 1892 and Netty was born 05 03 1898 both sadly lost their lives in concentration camps.

Still no closer to finding out what happened to Heinz Israel Rath aka Henry E Rath
