Afternoon all :-)

That's it Ann... It all depends on the cook.

My nearest primary school here, where my 3 children attended had a wonderful cook, who made her own bread rolls to go with something like a salad. She won awards for her cooking in the area school dinner assessments.
The present one, many years later is very good too.
Other primary schools in the area were varied.
One in particular served grey mushy cauliflower too often for my liking, so I always took a packed lunch, if I had to work there.

Afternoon everyone :-)

I have never heard of or seen this cake although I have eaten many school dinners.
We had something similar ie. Sponge spread with jam, then sprinkled with coconut, but definitely no icing on it.

Once I got beyond junior school, where mutton and dry butter beans seemed to be all too frequently delivered in big steel containers from some faraway depot, grammar school dinners, cooked fresh on the premises were very good.

JoyLouise Report 11 Aug 2022 11:17

That’s how we had it at school too and it always seemed strange to have an iced cake smothered in custard. I preferred chocolate or ginger pudding with custard. Semolina was my favourite milk pudding - still like it.
