Florence, mention of a hairdryer brought back the surprise of an acquaintance who went on holiday overseas with his wife and two daughters about forty years ago.

He was gobsmacked to discover when he got there that all three had packed a hairdryer in their suitcases. :-D

I'd forgotten about the spots.

If my mum wanted me to have a bit of a curl in my hair she would put the fire tongs into the fire of the kitchen boiler. I'm amazed I never caught fire but probably was just a bit singed.

Names, I remember now my mum used one of those.How strange to recall it. My mum had these curing tongs she would plug into the light fitting!!! Not sure how she never electrocuted me at times lol.

I bought heated rollers too a bit later and they were Carmen with the clips. When they were hot enough the red spot turned black.

Actually thinking about it my hairdryer may have been a 21st birhtday present. It had a tube attachment and a hood. Before then I used heated rollers that you boiled in water if I wanted a boost ( at times when my hair was shorter)

It was a Morphy Richards. In the 80's I bought a Clairoll 2000, that was a really powerful dryer and dried hair really quickly and it was Green!

Names, my hair was very long and took ages to dry so in the early 70's, my dad bought us one. Cant remember the name of it but grandma had the same.

How posh to have a hairdryer to take on holiday. :-). There wasn’t one in our house until I bought one myself with my wages. I don’t think my mum ever borrowed it,

I too remember about 2 months before our annual summer holiday, my mum would ask us to choose a few things from the catalogue for new summer clothes. I would get a pair of trousers, some sandals and a couple of tops. When they arrived, we were not allowed to wear them until the holiday.
Holidays were so much simpler. Less baggage as only room for 1 case each, but we had less clothes. We shared a hairdryer and shampoo etc.

I never went abroad in my childhood days, was usually to Pontins or Great Yarmouth to a caravan holiday park.

On a few day trips to France though, we went by coach or train, had a day pass no passport. Dont ever remember getting our bags searched.

Was definitely less stressful than today and no parents ringing you every 5 minutes lol as no mobile phones!

Those were the days.

Florence in the hebrides

Even travel within UK was a different experience.

I lived in south of England, but frequently travelled by train to South Wales to study.

So that I didn't have to heave a large suitcase with me ( hardly any had wheels back then ) my parents would take the packed case to our nearest station and it would be sent to Wales as 'Luggage in Advance' and I would follow a day or so later, then collect the suitcase from the Welsh station.
I don't remember anyone ever questioning what was in the case, so no security checks back then.

We did too. It panned out well for us twice. Once we were upgraded to First and on a later occasion to Business Class.

I could easily get used to the luxury of travelling first class - if only I had the wherewithal to afford to do so! :-D

Yes SylviainCanada I remember that too, holiday clothes bought for that reason :-D

............ and you got dressed up for the plane. Not in shorts, track suits or whatever!

Just the chalk squiggle on your cases to show you have passed the customs check and your British passport just waved through.

No mobile phones!
No computers!
No security measures at airports!

Ah, those were the days!

If you went abroad for a holiday you could take the maximum of £200 I think, no credit or debit cards in those days and life was so much easier then too.
