For reasons best known to themselves the bank I'm with has blocked all payments I have tried to make, there are sufficient funds and I have been with them for over 40 years, I will let them know how unhappy I am when I go there next week.

Has someone else perhaps tried to make an 'irregular' transaction, so security has stepped in ?

Personally ZZzzz, I wouldnt leave it until next week, i would first check the transactions on your account and then ring them to ask why you card is blocked.

Silly thought, but is the card in date? You havent reported it lost so its cancelled?

Is this an ordinary Visa debit card or is it a credit card?

Everything is as it should be, they haven't tried to contact me to check if it there has been a fraudulent transaction, we have spend over an hour waiting for an answer on the phone only for them to hang up on us, that is why I am going there next week for face to face.

Flo61 mentions a card. But it is unclear to me whether you are attempting to make payments online from your account, or using a card?

Last month I actioned a transfer from my main account to one of my sons. It was to a 'new' account. The transfer was held - and I couldn't get back into my account. All that was on the screen was a security message and a phone number.

Eventually got through to a chap who explained the reasons, and asked a few questions. He said that the transfer would now go through, that I would be able to access my account within a few minutes and that any further transfers to that account would go through unchallenged.

Santander are very security conscious - annoyingly so.

On two or three occasions I've tried to make payments online to new payees - not big amounts - and they've frozen my account (not allowing me to log in) until, after an hour or so on hold, I've been able to speak to someone.

What really annoys me is if the bank ring us ( doesn't happen so much these days ) and want to ask me a few 'security questions' to check it's really me. My answer is always that you rang me so you prove who you are - usually ends up in stalemate! They then write to us with something totally unimportant.
