Where are you trying to download your tree from/to?

Welcome to the boards, Tracy.

You have to export the GEDCOM file to another family tree programme.

A .ged file is just data. It can be opened with Notepad or similar text reader. It can also be copied into Excel - or Word, though I would not recommend the latter. But it will not make much sense to you. If you open it as I suggest, and scroll down, you will see your Family Tree names plus lots of other info. This info. is used to determine the links between the people in your tree.

As stated by ArgyllGran the .ged needs to be imported into another family tree program.

If you are trying to get a print of your tree there are companies who can do that for you from your .ged file.
