I think the two car parks in our village offer the choice of coins or phone, although as I hardly use them I am not to sure. Our little supermarket will give a voucher for the ticket machine. Don’t know how that works as I can still walk there.
The larger supermarkets, away from the village, all have free parking. Although one charges you a whopping sum if you stay for more than 3 hours.

Surely if you had to go to a shop to get your ticket then you could be ticketed like you whilst you are queuing up in the shop.

Ah I see. Oh dear, that was an expensive trip out then.

I once needed to go urgently into the bank to hand a letter in. It closed in 5 minutes and I did not have any change for the car park(small shoppers one).

I literally ran across into the bank, handed letter in and changed a £5 note into coins. I was gone 3 minutes max. On return, i went to the machine and bought a ticket as had decided to go and do a bit of shopping. But on return to put ticket inside the dash, I had been given a £60 fine for not displaying my ticket!

Anyway i drafted a letter, explained I had not intended to not purchase a ticket just I didnt have any change. So I photocopied the ticket and sent letter off. 6 weeks later they said my fine had been cancelled and no further action would be taken.

Apparently, some ticket wardens had been "hiding" in the public convenience building with binoculars spying to catch out those who evade buying a ticket. Then as soon as they are away from their car, these wardens pounced with a fine ticket and slapped it on their windscreen. Many others complained of their underhand tactics and soon the wardens disappeared!

Names, in my dads home town, all the machines are paid for parking tickets with a mobile. My dad's complaint was, not all people especially elderly have a mobile phone, so how would they pay? They would have to find a newsagents to buy a ticket. Removing the ticket machines to buy from saved the job of emptying the coins on a daily basis!

JL - my shins are covered in bruises ;-)
It amazes me how much people will pay for this sort of thing. So often I read thing like this and go 'Well, Duh!' because it is obvious.

Florence - it was a barried multi storey so you take the ticket away and pay at one of the machines - usually outside the actual car park on your return.. Stupidly I had it in a pocket instead of my bag and it must have worked itself out.
No paying by mobile phone ( imagine the queues) and I have never heard of any store refunding the money for this particular car park.

If only the bus service was better.

remember some one from my youth , saying " never pay your bills with your own money!!

meaning,( I think..)..always wait till YOU get paid by your customer, before paying your supplier.........

Names, when you say you lost the ticket, do you mean, it fell off the dashboard? When you buy a ticket, you have to display it in the front so did you lose it on route to the car?

I’d be kicking myself, names.

Take heart though - I bet it’s a good lesson learned the hard way.

Here’s a little snippet I’ve just heard on the news.

Apparently the FA spent 11 million pounds looking into the impact of hosting a World Cup then released a statement on behalf of the five associations stating that they accepted the conclusion of the five associations that now is not the moment to proceed with a bid then went on to say that they remained passionate about bringing a World Cup to the UK and Ireland when the time is right …..and it only cost them 11 million quid to discover that!

I am rolling about laughing at the ineptitude of some people but deep down I think it is patently obvious that some people are really good at spending other people’s (such as taxpayers and football fans) cash without turning a hair.
