The Bank of England will withdraw the legal tender status of the paper £20 and £50 notes after September 30 2022, and it is encouraging anyone who has them at home to spend or deposit them at their bank or Post Office.

Thank you.
There are no £50 notes of any sort in this house, but there just might be a paper £20.

I will check.

ZZzzz Report 29 Sep 2021 16:48

But you can always get the face value of these notes at a bank. If there are still banks open for business.

JoyLouise Report 29 Sep 2021 16:54

Or spend them before then because when they're banked, the bank will hold on to them rather than circulate them as the end time draws near.

My hairdresser took one recently that had been in my purse since March 2020 lockdown.

I have two left - I might have a rare old time with them (or not). ;-)

ZZzzz Report 29 Sep 2021 16:58

Years ago we found a £20 note that had been under the bed and out of circulation for 10 years and had a new given to us.

I found a load of old £1 coins. Took them to the bank, and the teller said
'Some of these may be worth more than £1 are you sure you want to change them?' :-D

ZZzzz

ZZzzz Report 29 Sep 2021 17:39

What are you going to do with them?

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 29 Sep 2021 18:38

I found 3 x £1 notes and took them to the bank years after they went out of circulation.

In hindsight, I rather wish I had kept them :-(

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 29 Sep 2021 19:01

The |£1 coins? I changed them.
I'd already looked to see their worth, and it was a lot of hassle (and bus fare) to get £5 for a £1 coin!!

Having read the article it is only the paper notes that
will be affected!
Not the polymer banknotes.
So that was very misleading Dermot.

nameslessone Report 1 Oct 2021 12:39

Dermot did say paper :-S

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 1 Oct 2021 22:50

But don't we still refer to non-coin money as 'paper' money?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 1 Oct 2021 23:05

We'd be inclined to call non-coin money "folding money". Have you ever tried to fold the new polymer notes?

When my friend was asked if he wanted anything from the shop he would say an ounce of £5 notes please.
