No matter how hard I try, I have never been able to make a cheese jaffle/toastie like one particular lady used to make in Cole’s New World, Frankston - a bit like Woolies with a cafe, but other Cole’s branches were large and used to sell groceries too.

I was much younger then and this lady was older and had a magic touch. :-D

Try as I might, I can not replicate it at all and it’s such a simple thing.

'Black' bread. The bread our neighbours in Malta ate. I was only 3 or 4, but I loved it.
It was cream coloured bread, with an extremely dark crust, and was delicious.

It was nearly replicated on holiday in Italy, when one of our party bought some 'local' flour from the shop, made the bread, and baked it in the pizza oven.

Following the favourite meal thread, have you ever eaten something that you are forever trying to find again?

In 1974, on Brighton pier, I had a baked potato with egg mayonnaise and I have been wanting to eat that potato again ever since. Likewise, when sandwich toasters irst were the thing, I bought a toasted sandwich in a cafe near Gosport ferry that had cheese and plum chutney in it I think.

Well, ever since then in 1979, I have sought another one. I did however manage to replicate the mushroom omelette and chips I bought in that takeaway in Farehm about the same time.
