And you prove someone wrong they look like they are going to punch you in the face, it happened to me, I stood up to him, all 5' of me against 6' 1" of him, he backed off. This was in a small office that apparently he wanted to be the boss, ha didn't work.
Has this happened to you and did you have the shakes for a while afterwards?

It happened quite a lot, working with teenagers!

I had one young lad say to me "You're safe here, miss, there are lots of people around, but what about when you're at home?"

" That sounds a little threatening, J, but thanks for the heads up" I replied.
"What do you mean" he asked
"Well", I said, "If anything happens, I'll know where to send the police - your house"
"You don't know where I live" He said.
"I'm just off to the office to find out", I said, as I walked away.

That boy, and his horrible friends, were impeccably behaved, in any class I was helping in. :-D

I also realised I can't lie. The words coming out of my mouth may be nice, but my face shows my real feelings.
My daughters, as adults, also confessed that, as children, they used to deliberately wind me up, (this took quite a bit of effort) as my eyes flicked rapidly from side to side when I was very annoyed.

Imagine if you were some poor irritating child who had me as their 'helper' and my eyes suddenly started flicking rapidly from side to side.
I think you'd decide to behave :-D :-D :-D

I was also informed by a child I used to help, (when he was an adult) that I had a 'look' (not flickering eyes) which meant 'You'd better stop what you're doing right now'. I'm not sure what they thought I would do to them, but, apparently, it put the fear of God into them!

This could explain how, a few times, I've accidentaly reduced an irritating/badly behaved dog to a whimpering wreck with just a look.
It doesn't appear to work on cats!

I find my glare works, I don't usually have to say a word as it melts them on the spot :-D :-D. I also have a good few put downs that come in useful.

It depends what is said to me as to how I answer and also on age group and sex :-D

My children always said i have a look and never argued with it !
I also worked with special needs and learning support who actually were hardly any bother but a few others in the mainstream class knew my look and would immediately behave.
So maybe less is more and that expression "if looks could kill" are maybe more effective.
I dont do slanging matches and certainly not in a public place or workplace. Why lower yourself to their level.
Just straighten up your shoulders and breathe in to grow a few inches in height and give that look that says"nobody messes with me." I guarantee the other person will back off and walk away. Try it ZZzzz next time you are in a situation and see what happens.

But remember as laGooner says it depends on circumstance, age etc
