Mostly for Dermot and people across the water.

Dermot

Dermot Report 11 Aug 2021 17:56

Thanks for that, Rollo.

'According to SIL International's Ethnologue: Languages of the World, there are over 6,900 spoken languages'.

As I am still floundering with my basic English, RTR & his many followers could start a new thread wishing a 'Happy Summer holiday' to all the regular readers/participants on here, using as many different languages as possible.

'Google Translate' might be helpful.

Just a thought for the next few weeks & to demonstrate to the world that we now live in a multilingual nation. ;-) Amen!

Will you accept double Dutch?

Dermot, we'd have to start with cod-Latin :-D

My nephew and niece had to speak Irish at school - they said it was fecking uafásach.

If we're going to defend the language our *checks notes* gggm (is that gg grandmother or ggg grandmother?) spoke - Ny veu kevys sewyans vyth my luvver?

Then we come to dialects:
Bugger'd iff oi ken see woi ever person don' spake proper loike um do en Suffik

Looks like I'd have to speak Cornish with a Suffolk accent! :-S :-S

Why not? I speak Strine with more than a hint of Lancastrian :-D

maggiewinchester Report 11 Aug 2021 23:25

There is a dfference between a language and a dialect or accent - it appears to have bypassed some :-D

Pretty sure ZZzzz didn't say the Irish language was Gibberish,....I'm with you ZZzzz gibberish all round.....

It’s always a shame when people don’t actually read what is written and follow their own agenda.

Dermot suggested using different languages, ZZzzz offered her expertise in Gibberish - nothing to do with any other language.

This really started life as a political and public interest thread, didn’t it!

I am for teaching Irish in all Irish (northern and southern) schools. I feel that the particular Unionists who have taken exception to it have shot themselves in the foot with this divisive thinking. They may need to learn the language so they can know when people are cursing them. ;-)

It takes all sorts …..

But if RTR read it properly, he couldn't get on his high horse, mention an ancestor and pretend to be affronted!!
