A competition and in my opinion an unnecessary expense.

A quote from the paper
"The youngsters donned traditional cap and gowns for the occasion and were invited on stage to collect a book filled with photos of their time there and messages of good luck from all the staff.

Afterwards they all lined up for photos and then it was time to throw their mortarboards in their air, just like university graduates."

I think it has become a "thing" these days. My grandson left nursery to go to "big school" in 2003 and they had a graduation ceremony. It was the first time I had heard of such a thing. They all had a piece of cloth round them like gowns and the kids had all made their own mortar boards and coloured them in.

It's a bit like the older kids have to have a "prom" these days but I think it is a struggle for some of the families to afford the "prom". I know of people who spend more than the cost of a wedding dress on a prom dress and then they try to arrive at the "do" in the fanciest transport.

I'm glad my sons didn't have either of these things.
