I was told my paternal grandparents had 17 children; only 13 were surviivimh that I knew. I know one son died aged 10, I managed to find that in the deaths (because I knew his name). Where can I search the names of the other 3 who were not very old?

Try looking on freebmd.org for possible births in the right area, then check out the possibles in the deaths.
The births, depending on when they were, may give you the mother’s maiden name.

Mother's maiden name was put on records from 1911 so if the children were born after that date it should be quite straight forward

GRO has the mother's maiden name on all records from 1837 on. That's starts a lot earlier than Freebmd, and is also free

The only time the mmn doesn't show is if the child is illegitimate, or if both parents had the same surname when the computer doing the digitising couldn't recognise that the mother was indeed married!

You have to register with GRO, but it is free. GRO is also the ONLY place other than a local Registry Office that you should buy certificates from.
