I am on another website and someone asked “What names do you think are aesthetic?”. The teenagers and early 20 year olds are giving name suggestions and the rest of us are asking aesthetic what? Most of us on the site have never just seen the word aesthetic used on its own.

Did they mean names you liked?

I always liked Virginia but when I told the males in my family they fell about laughing at the thought of what nicknames my daughter would have once she started school! :-D

We assumed they meant aesthetically pleasing.

One chap I worked with years ago was named Godfrey, he hated it and was known by his middle name, I suggested to him that he use his first given name and if people shortened it he would be God, he was amused by that and did it.

After some more digging apparently it helps them visualise the the word stylised

Tawny, here is an aesthetic name from the past (word association - from Wolf):

Wilfred Pickles. (For the life of me I can't recall his wife's name ... Elsie springs to mind but it may be wrong.)

Names seem to have their eras, don't you think? I wonder if aesthetics (? is that the name for such people - it doesn't sound quite right) ever take eras into account - or perhaps that's precisely what they meant by an aesthetic name - one that fits into the surroundings of the time?

A lot of 'old' names now seem to be back in fashion.
I haven't heard of young Hildas yet, but several of my old aunts' names are used again, after a gap of 80 + years or so.

I agree. I am often surprised when I hear of new-borns being given some names that I consider to be quite old-fashioned. I ought not to be because that often seems to indicate the latest trend.

Aestheticists (I've lighted upon that word that sprung from the nether regions of my mind) must be pleased to see a lot of babies named from a single era as 'it can't sit right' with them to have a Zane in the middle of Wilfs, Georges and Jims.
