Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 11 Feb 2021 11:52

Remember log. books in Maths.?

Something I never needed or used once I left school, whereas most of my other learning has come in useful at some point.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 11 Feb 2021 11:55

I used a slide rule in the lab I worked in straight from school. :-D

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 11 Feb 2021 11:59

Think my dad may have used a log book at work but couldn't swear to it. Knew it was part of his apprenticeships

Island

Island Report 11 Feb 2021 12:04

Ooo.... are we swagging about school subjects today? :-D

I was good at French, Maths until logarithms reared their ugly head, English grammar until gerunds came into play, loved what we called 'compositions'. I was good at geometry.
Didn't do cookery - it's common sense when you need to eat isn't it? Loved 'art' but we didn't have a proper art teacher so one was assigned to baby sit the class.
Hated sport and found history and geography boring.

Learning is down to good teachers, those who don't engage with pupils will be giving low marks.

Afternoon Pat :-D meant to say, I wasn't moaning about the cold and ice bucket.... just informing :-D

Island Report 11 Feb 2021 12:07

Oh and sewing :-D very good at that and still sew when fingers permit. :-(

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 11 Feb 2021 12:19

I dropped sewing and domestic science. Sewing teacher couldn't understand I didn't have access to a sewing machine other than school. Was shocked to find how proficient I was at knitting but pointed out all my mother's family were knitters not known for sewing.

Art - I'm a disaster.

Cooking is chemistry :-D caught up with baking when I married - was cooking our evening meal Monday - Friday from age 13.

Represented school at hockey and rounders - loved sports.

Island Report 11 Feb 2021 12:27

Our sewing teacher expected me to hand stitch the seams of a princess line dress :-0
I'd been using my mothers sewing machine since I was 10 so made the wretched dress at home. Teacher accused me of having my mother make it for me because "you don't know haw to use I sewing machine because I haven't taught you" Nasty woman.

:-D :-D :-D :-D in their realms you do as they say syndrome

I had to make a square necked blouse - smallest pattern size 10. Told the teacher it was far too big as I was about 4 ft 8 ins, only 12 and very slim. Teacher insisted size 10 was the correct size for my age. It dropped off my shoulders and neckline came just below my bust - mum used it as a duster and moaned it was an expensive duster. Teacher said it was my fault so I put on someone else's size 10 who had good marks for it and same happened - she just glared at me.

Well I’m definitely not bragging about anything ;-) ;-)

I can confirm that I did get up as dim as a dim thing today :-| :-| :-|

Went to make cakes. Put margarine and sugar into mixer. Turned it on to beat gently.

Didn’t bother with bowl shield as it was only beating slowly.

Do you know how far sugar can fly :-0 :-0 :-0

Need a lie down after the trauma of cleaning the kitchen ;-)

I remember school log books Gwyn. :-D

Pat, I would not say I was as sporty as real athletes are but I loved some sports such as tennis - at school we had a couple of lawn courts and six yukky dirt hardcore. I wasn't too bad at badminton either. I was in the school rounders team (still have a strong arm) and was invited to join the gym team so I must have been decent in the gym.

Other than that .... I was useless at netball and hockey, hurdles, relay and all else and I didn't care for them either.

It's amazing what you remember though and as part of my degree after my bookkeeping and accounts stint, I had to get stuck in to statistics, pie charts and things like that - and even now after years of retirement I still find that sort of thing easy to understand, Shame that my maths and economics lecturers are no longer here to tell because I must have been such a pain to them.

Apart from when I had no choice but to attend and learn computer studies in order to teach others at work how to use them (probably in the same occupational vein as you did Pat) I never thought about 'proper' teaching like Von, it never appealed to me.

I was asked to consider lecturing twice in the middle of my working life when I'd changed tack (both subjects with geography content).

Never in a million years did I want to be a proper teacher or lecturer.

Too much patience required with children and adults who just don't 'get it' as far as I'm concerned. It was always enough to teach my own.

Over to you Von <3

I bet you have some tales to tell, I know the teachers in my family have a few.

Afternoon Island, Belle and Ann. <3 :-D

Can't seem to drag myself away from the kitchen table so sat here chatting since breakfast :-0

Von, trying to stifle my giggles here. I only know of one other person who did that - my oldest sis. We didn't half laugh.

Belle - sand! I know what you mean. :-0

It gets into your sandwiches too!

I hate sandy beaches. :-|

Taught one evening a week to adults wanting qualifications for payroll jobs. Only did a couple of courses, couldn't get through to the people in charge that rules and allowances changed every year for payroll so the books and computer programme had to be updated.

No good at netball too short. Not into athletics. No access to tennis courts at school, we only had a field some distance away from the school. No changing facilities so we walked through the streets in our kit.

Played tennis in the WRAF and played for my station. Played badminton for exercise at a small RAF camp - no proper sports there. The WRAFs were allowed the hanger/gym one evening per week and only about 8 ever turned up :-D

Ann, believe it or not, the only time our pipes froze was when we lived in Oz.

The water meter was at the edge of the front garden and a pipe rose into a curve next to it. There was only us and one other family next door at the time with the next dwelling being hundreds of feet away. The land was flat and we got the blast from the ocean (which we could not see from our house). We woke up one morn to no water.

Something I never expected there and never experienced here.
