I think the problem was with Di.

If the item had been put on Keepsafe with appropriate permissions then everyone could have had a go.

I've never contacted Island before.

Her name shows as a series of dots for me too, so I have just sent a 'Testing the system' p m to see if that sends and is received.
It is showing as SENT in my records.

Helping others by pm is only frowned upon if you don't mention on the thread that you are doing that and don't mention what help you have given - that could waste other people's time.

However for someone to send a document for you to see it can only be done by pm or email and even to get someone's email address needs a pm to start with.

I have just found a message I had from Island a few weeks ago. When we conversed then , her name appeared as a series of dots and now is just blank.

Have sent her a message in reply to see if it gets there.

Island, I think perhaps you should contact Genes.

I have just clicked on several names at the top of posts and they are all behaving normally, except yours, which is coming up blank.

I will never question anything like that because I am so inept that I have big problems sending anything to anybody.

Didn't know helping behind the scenes was frowned upon, have only ever done anything like that furtively.

I thought helping other members by pm was much frowned up as it wasted others time?

Kath, I did ask why di 'why it wouldn't let her send me a message' and she hasn't said.
It's a bit concerning when I pay a sub like everyone else but apparently 'it' won't let pm's be sent to me. :-S

It needed a pm to get the document.

That was the bit that caused me trouble.I don't have Word anymore and have the devils own job with the one I have now.

I don't think it was that your offer just wasn't taken up Island. Di did say in her post that she wasn't able to send you a message - she did try.

I don't think you can really ever get a definitive answer to this one as I know my translation was not the same as Kathleen's and that I came to it via a different route.

Well Di seemed happy with the transcription I gave her but I'm not sure whether she thinks the query is now solved or not.

I had a go as well.

I answered Di's private message with what I thought were the correct names from the baptism document she sent me and also a transcription I found on Findmypast which I think was nearer the mark. The baptism was from the 1600's so quite old fashioned writing.
