No fun for hard-of-hearing folk.

Even I, whose hearing so far is OK, have difficulty at times when people whose speech is clear then drop the volume almost to a whisper at the end of some words and sentences.

I don't know what's being taught at acting schools but very few enunciate well and it's got worse over recent years.

I find that newsreaders are spot on but I expect that's one of the reasons they are chosen for the job.

News reports in particular can be baffling to those of us, who are hard of hearing and use subtitles to hopefully help understanding.
Because picture and written words are not relayed at the same time, there is not always the visual clue.

Some years back, I kept reading about Mystic Lake.

Watching the report more closely, I realised they were talking about Mr Clegg.


One of my favourites though was on a local news report and mentioned a Sussex vicar.
Subtitles referred to him as 'a sausage filler'.

There aren't half some howlers in subtitled text.

Always good for a giggle when things are looking iffy (love to see how that translates!).

Given the lamentations from the corporate and state sectors deploring our poor record in acquiring foreign languages, it would be interesting to hear how many of our politicians would be capable of conducting business at any level in languages other than English. :-0

I'm always amused when one of those subtitled thrillers translate sear words.
They have quite plainly used an 'old English Saxon' swear word and it gets translated into something milder.

Obviously the subtitle writers don't watch British television ;-)

Is there any hope? I have just seen an English teacher said he was overcoe by the amount of messages he received.

NO! You receive a number of massages, just like you cannot have an amount of people Mr English Teacher sir!

If you could only do well in English you would make your mother and I very happy!

appears in some instances...

Apparantly, grammer & spilling is regaining there wrightful plaice in sum junior skools. ;-)

That's what comes of using Russian-made speech recognition software.

I was watching a news programme yesterday with the subtitles on. The item was about maternity wards during the current crisis and the subtitles had pregnant mums being admitted to "anti-Nato" wards. :-D :-D
