I didn't have a rude awakening this morning

...but I could have had!
My loo is downstairs, and I needed it at about 6am this morning.
I was just going back upstairs when I heard (and felt) what appeared to be an enormous explosion.
I froze, and waited for other noise, screams, shouts, sirens, etc.
It did fleetingly cross my mind that maybe my house had blown up, and I was dead - that's the problem of being half asleep.

Carried on upstairs and went to bed.

It transpires, it was 'thundersnow', was preceded by lightning, and followed by snow :-S
I wasn't the only one who thought it was an explosion, either.

It didn't sound at all like 'normal' thunder.

We had the same thing in the north east a few weeks ago (can't remember exactly when as the days are all running into one for me) but it was very loud. I had never heard of it before then either.

Weird isn't it, Kathleen.
Some, on a local Facebook page, said their windows rattled :-S

We felt as if the house shook. We are used to heavy trains going past that make the house feel as if it is shaking but this was even worse.

The emergency services said they had hundreds of calls from worried residents.

I can't believe I hadn't heard of it before.
