My sister and I have been to Portishead.
We went the 'pretty' way, for 2 reasons - my sister hates driving on motorways, and we've both been, like a lot of the population, essentially 'locked away' for months, and wanted to see some scenery.

Well, we went through a village called Buckland Dinham.
Dinham is a family name.
I jokingly said 'Our Dinhams could have owned this once'. ('owned' as in held the fief)
Sister laughed in a scoffing way - anything I've done in genealogy, I've had to follow up, and provide 'concrete' evidence for her to believe. No bad thing, really.

Although this side of our family is essentially Cornish, it does spread into Devon and Somerset, Brittany and Normandy - the de Dinhams were originally de Dinans - from Dinan, in Brittany.

Well, now home, I had a look. Apparently, according to Wiki, ' The village (Buckland Dinham) used to be known as Buckland Denham. Denham is believed to be a family name'.
Perhaps I was wrong about my Dinhams.

Our most recent Dinham ancestor is Joanna de Dinham, (born 1248) who married Sir Roger de Carminowe (born 1240).

Joanna's father was Sir Geoffrey de Dinham, listed as:
Knight, of Hartland, co. Devon and Buckland Denham, co. Somerset.

So yes, our ancestor (and ancestor of thousands of others) did once have the fiefdom of Buckland Dinham! :-D

Maggie, that is strange with the name Denham as my grandparents and father lived in Eastleigh. Grandfather was a Baptist minister and was very friendly with a family of Denhams, who strangely lived at Denhams corner in Hornton Heath,I think.

My father knew the children well as many an afternoon tea was had there.

I think Keith Denham was an MP not that long ago in that area.

One of the (knight) Dinhams had seats in Hampshire - definitely one of the Wallops, there were a few who were MP's, in the 15th/16th centuries, and a Denham who appears to have been in Romsey.
There were quite a few Dinhams - they appear to have got around a bit!

My direct relationship to them by name ended when Johanna de Dinham (born 1248) married Roger de Carminowe

Yes Caroline, their son whom my father knew or actually thinking about it may be the grandson of Mrs Denham as my dad is 83 and keith is quite a bit younger i think.
