you should dowload the ged com to your desktop, then open it into a pukka family tree program...

It is not possible to download a GR gedcom directly to the desktop.
Instead do this:
On the main menu bar select Family Tree ¦ Export GedCom
The file will then be exported - usually < 24 hrs
The Gedcom file will arrive as an email attachment using the email address that GR has for your account.
Sometimes the mail client dumps it into the junk/spam folder.
If there is a delay look for it there and set genesr. as not spam.
Only text will be exported, nothing else.

N.B. I ran a test for my own tree ( 8000 records ). The gedcom file arrived after three hours.
