I have a relative on the 1911, born in Secunderabad India, described as 'British by percentage'
I think I know what it might mean
Does anyone out there know exactly what it mean?

Does it perhaps say, British by parentage ?

I agree with Gwyn. British by parentage.

If you are just going off the transcript, then check the image.

It should be "by parentage", but the images were transcribed by people who may well have mis-read the handwriting

Never ever take a transcription as proof, always try to check the image for any census!

Some were transcribed by people in other countries who would not be native English speakers. But the transcribers always have to put what they see not even if they know it doesn't look correct.
