As from March 2020 banks will have to ensure that the name of the beneficiary of an account matches with that of the transaction in hand.
That will make some kinds of fraud a lot more difficult and should stop transfers in error altogether.

The other day my son had a call on his mobile whilst he was in the office. the taxman was after him and need to act quickly to stop being arrested.

Gave everyone he works with a good laugh. Guess who they all work for....

not the bank scam, but the windows one ..............

the other night they called at 10:45 PM :-0 :-P

I won't tell you the language I used, but the phone went silent before I'd finished :-D


BTW ................. I always let the phone ring at least twice before I answer it, even if I know who is going to call at a certain time. 9 times out of 10 someone else has answered the phone ........ that's because the automated call system they use calls 10 numbers at once.

I wish I could get OH to do the same ............. he picks up the phone immediately :-(

We got the same scam phone call this afternoon. Have had it quite a few times before but not lately.. I wish all such calls could be blocked but if you block one number they just move one to using another number.

Our house phone, besides being permanently on answerphone diverts through Alexa who tells us in a loud voice the number calling, if no number given she says number unknown or number witheld.

We recently installed new home phones with a built in telephone angel.

All calls (unless they are recognised from our phone number memory list) are screened.

The caller is asked to state who they are, our phone then rings to tell us who is on the line and we can choose to accept, divert to answerphone or block.

Sorry to hear your Mum has been worried by this call.
I have had numerous similar ones, - all for the mysterious £600.

What with them and the ones from Amazon ( said in automated American drawl accent) saying my (non-existent )account has been compromised, I now don't bother to answer calls much of the time.

I have just had my mother phone to say, someone appearing to be her bank phoned to advise her that £600 had been withdrawn from her Mastercard and she was to press 1 etc....
This has happened not that long ago and this time mum correctly said nothing, just listened and put the phone down.
She doesn't actually have a Mastercard anyway.

So just beware if you get one of these calls for the first time and do what my mum did so you wont get caught out and be scammed.
