The Index only shows the year of birth Steve.

If you know their adopted surname you could search alphabetically, but if you only know their adopted given name it would mean an entry by entry search and hope their given name was an unusual one!

You would still only have minimal information and would need someone with the authority to access the closed register to obtain further details.

There are face book pages which help people find adopted relatives, although I am not sure this is the best way forward - and bear in mind that not all adopted people want contact.

The Adopted indexes list all who are entered who were adopted in 1960...…….

In their new christain name date of their birth,and county of adoption. and entry No into the Closed Childrens Adoption Register,,....nothing relates to their birth or any new surname.

You will have no idea who any of these people are or were.

I'm sorry, I'm getting confused about the Register.

So if for example I was looking for say Cameron Diaz,
Cameron being her new Adopted name, and I knew
the month, day, and year and area. And I had the Register in
front of me for 1960, I could potentially view all
the people born on that day, or month and Cameron
would be one of them . Or, the Register is just "1960"
but not days and months inside. ??

Adoption Indexes are in many pubic major libraries.




These are indexes Only and are arranged in much the same way as E/W main birth index,,,,but are post adoption,,,,,,,on Fiche and can only be viewed in person.....there is nothing relating the person to their birth index,,,,,,,,,,

Steve, the 1960 Adoption Register Index has the adoptees name in alphabetical order. The only other information in this index gives the year of their birth, the date of entry on to the Register, the entry number and the volume number. Someone with the appropriate authority would then have to access the volume for further information.

The new 'birth' certificate gives the 'name and surname, address and occupation of adopter or adopters' and 'date of adoption order and description of court by which made'.

The info on certificate is taken from a copy I obtained of my sibling who was adopted out of the family in 1959.

I would imagine a short version of the certificate would be available as for any other birth, and wouldn't identify them as adopted, but this last bit I don't know for sure.

The cert will have an entry No that matches the entry No on the New Certificate,

So yes Adoption does appear and when a full certificate is needed for many reasons -passport,entry into the army etc or many jobs,,people find out they are an adoptee.who had no prior knowledge of,

Does the "new" birth cert with the new adopted name
On, have the word "Adopted" on it like the original Birth cert

I think the adoption register is just that...ie. the year that the adoption took place. Often this would be for a very young child but equally the adoption could apply to a child of any age, if still a minor.

The adoption entry would be in the child's new / adoptive name, which may or may not bear any resemblance to their previously registered birth name. Age / birth month and year would not be shown.

My first question would be, if I was lucky enough to be able
To view the Adoption register (I know I'm not able)
For 1960. Would the Register be listed by months, Eg
January births, Febuary births etc. Or just the whole country
Births for 1960. Would you know ?

If you have already read the info on https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register and need a personal viewpoint, it might help to give a rough date, as certain specifics may have altered depending on decade ( and location).
