So sad to hear this.

We met him in real life, at a Botany Meeting in Eastern Canada a number of years ago. We enjoyed listening to his talk, and also spent a couple of boozy evenings with him ;-)

He was just like he was on the TV shows ............ no side to him at all, and brutally honest in his opinions!

One of the first climate change refusniks well out of tune with today's youth.
A shame cos he was inspiring on TV. I missed him when he largely vanished from the screen.

David Bellamy influenced the parents of today's youth, and they, in turn, influenced their children, so not really 'out of tune', but very relevant.
Of a different era, perhaps, and anti climate change, but he got children interested in nature, and they went from there.
I'm sure if today's children saw his programmes, they would be as enthralled as their parents were.

Was that the one at Butts Ash? We used to walk that way home from school.
The girls regularly removed stag beetles from the path (we'd come across people killing them, because they were big ) :-(

Yep that's the one :-)

Ah the giant stag beetles remember them well. :-) :-)

...and from there, my eldest built a willow 'teepee' in her garden - which hornets found was an ideal place to nest.
Her children didn't avoid it - they went in there to quietly read books, as hornets rarely attack.
And so it gathers momentum.
My grandchildren regularly attend the climate change protests.
I thank David Bellamy for educating us and our children.

I still think drunk hornets (those that eat rotting fruit) are hilarious, rather than frightening. Just find a fruit tree in late summer, where no-one's removed the fallen fruit. The hornets can't walk, let alone fly or sting!

When, as a child, we had an 'outdoor' loo (a bucket with a loo seat, in a shed), hornets took up residence over the door. Dad refused to move it, saying we'd be okay, as long as we didn't make too much noise, or spend too much time in there (ie don't read the loo paper!), and he was right.
My dad was ahead of his time.....

He made science and nature as a child for me so interesting. He got us out and about in to the gardens etc and we learnt so much.

We were not afraid to dig and get our hands dirty either which sadly this current indoor generation rarely do!

Sad news
Florence in the hebrides :-(
