AnninGlos Report 9 Dec 2019 08:44

Also one in Florence early this morning. edit 4K north of Florence.

Sorry David misread your post earthquake 4K north of Florence but felt in the centre of Florence. Train out of Florence were halted because of a landslide on the line and some flights out of Pisa cancelled as well. Our friends flight was cancelled.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 9 Dec 2019 08:50

It's an earthquake near Florence.

Volcano in NZ at this moment 5 dead, 20 severely injured and 27 missing.

The volcano id the top of it, at the bottom, on the sea bed you may have an earthquake that could cause a Tsunami.

Tawny Report 9 Dec 2019 12:54

R.I.P All those who lost their lives. At the moment it’s unconfirmed but suspected to be 32 in New Zealand. No deaths or serious injuries confirmed in Italy.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 9 Dec 2019 13:06

Just been declared - no more survivors expected in NZ. There have been flights over the island and no sightings of anyone. Camera in the crater showed a group in there only moments before it erupted.

So sad but the choice is there's to take that chance.
I for one would not.
RIP

some people are as daft as a brush
still somebody at Royal Caribbean should have been able to make a proper warning of risk - there will be a lawyer's beanfeast

with this type of volcano the "eruptions" are not magma but water and mud ie it is a very large geyser. Thus it is possible to install sensory equipment to monitor the water pressure and hence the measure of risk in a visit.

Large numbers inc Kiwis have visited over the years. Familiarity breeds contempt.

To be fair, the cruise ship expedition manager would only have cancelled the tour IF he/she had been advised there had been recent readings that would have caused concern..

The people that monitor the seismic activity have intimated they may have missed warning signs.

No comfort for the families who have lost loved ones.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 9 Dec 2019 19:37

There is no monitoring of White Island other than seismic readings from the mainland which will say nothing about the water pressure in the geyser. That there had been a marked increase in steam venting from the crater lake for some days was well known. It was also well known that this is a warning of incipient eruption of steam and hot mud..

Keeping tourists happy at any risk has always been a failing of the travel industry.

A few years ago a volcano north of the equator eropted. Because of fine ash
thrown into the atmosphere all aeroplanes were grounded fpr days for safety.

No warning

Monitoring and warning for hydrothermal eruptions is a huge challenge. We don’t normally see these eruptions coming, no matter how much we would like to. Many systems are already “primed” for such events, but the triggers are poorly understood.
The warning periods, once an event gets under way, are likely in the order of seconds to minutes. Our only hope for anticipating these events is to track potential vapour and liquid pressure in hydrothermal systems and to learn from their long-term behaviour when they are at a super-critical state. Unfortunately there are no simple rules that can be followed and each hydrothermal system is different.

From the Guardian tonight.

Such a terrible thing to happen! Tourists making memories, tour guides earning a living, there's no distnction between people in death and injury. My heart goes out to all who have been affected and their loved ones too

I wonder how many of them really were told how risky the trip could be? I'm guessing at best they'd have the basic warning along the lines you know it's active but nothing major has happened for ages type warning. Very sad situation.

Barbra Report 10 Dec 2019 17:32

So many people injured as well as the ones lost their lives the rescuers will have a sad job recovering the poor people left if ever they do .just so sad .good to see the world & it's wonders but at what cost <3

GNS Science is monitoring White Island with three web cameras, one seismograph and a microphone to detect volcanic explosions. White Island also has its own resident dinosaur, "Dino". See if you can spot him in the web cameras
.
**** Three monthly visits are made to test water, gas and soil, as well as to make surveys of surface deformation. Check out our video to see our volcano experts in action on White Island.*****
