Bagpuss that goes back a bit :-)

Sounds like you had a great trip Maggie.

I always prefer the pretty routes if time allows.

Dermot - we knew we were in Devon - the sign by the side of the road was a clue!

It may be your preferred route from London, Dermot - but we were going from Winchester to Somerset - not Devon, and would have been on the M5 for a short distance the other side of Taunton. We avoid this, as there's a parallel, prettier route.

We have fun getting to our brothers 'smithy' a few miles from Luxborough - every time, we end up going a different way!

As for Devon - I used to live in Horrabridge.
The ancient packhorse bridge that joins the two parts of the village, was used in the opening credits of 'Bagpuss'. :-D

I also used to live in Gunnislake - which is in Cornwall, but very close to the Tamar and the border with Devon.

maggiewinchester - if you don't know where you are going, how do know when you have arrived?

M4/M5 is my preferred route from west London to Exeter. (The lovely small city of Exeter is definitely in Devon.)

Home now (actually got home at mid-day) - no sat-nav taking us to Devon - and we avoided most of the A303! :-D
Brother's taking a 3 month 'sabbatical' from making pots to carry on with the smithy.
He's replacing a window, and making the area smaller so it's the same height as the others (this one is huge), so he's doing a bit of natural stone walling :-S

Yes. On our way here, sister 'touched' the sat nav and we ended up in Devon!
Not only that, on trying to find our way back, we were caught up in the last Somerset stag hunt of the year.
But Dulverton is definitely in Somerset. :-D

Sounds great Maggie and also great to hear of somebody of his age able to still do heavy manual work. We are on the Jurassic coast.

70 is young these days ;-)

The smithy is coming along wonderfully.
Though sister and I looked at our brothers plans for future development and both said ' The living room has to be bigger'.
(Bl**day sisters turn up occasionally and altering plans!)
He's 70 this year, and is still doing all the building work (putting in mezanine floors windows, etc) himself!

Deepest, darkest Dulverton.
Sister and I are visiting our brother, who is a bonsai potter, who is also doing up an old smithy about 5 miles away.
This was an opportunity to indulge in alcohol and late nights.
The TV has limited access, and the CD player keeps jamming, so we end up going to bed earlier than we would at home!
But the people of Dulverton are lovely <3
