Instead of giving up sweets or chocolate for Lent. each day of Lent put aside one item of clothing or anything you no longer use or want (or even something you do use that would be of use to somebody else, I suppose to stay in with the idea of Lent). At the end of Lent donate everything you have set aside to a charity shop or similar.

Okay, how about 5 bin bags :-D
Edit: by that I mean big black bin bags.

It's a brilliant idea, I may try it :-D

Another idea - and could do this over Lent but it is better over a year - is each day you put away a penny and the following day you increase it by a penny and so on.
So, 1p then 2p then 3p etc.
By the end of the year you will have "saved" nearly £670 to use either as a treat or to donate.
However, if you do it just over Lent you will have put aside £8.20 which would pay for a decent meal and a coffee for a homeless person. The best of it is, by the end of Lent you would only be putting away 40p on the last day so you would hardly notice it.
I have written an Android app to show how much to "pay in" each day, how much to put in extra if you miss a few days, how much total is saved etc.
