"A glass of wine a day can be good for you - if you're older than age 50, a new study finds.

Researchers found a tipple here and there did wonders for offsetting age-related diseases that emerge in middle age - including coronary heart disease, dementia, diabetes, stroke and osteoporosis.

In fact, alcohol prevents about 1,500 deaths a year - and the team at Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts found that 80 percent of those are among adults age 65 and older."

:-D :-D :-D :-D

Mum is 87 and hasn't drunk alcohol since my conception in 1957 :-)

Maybe it is time to lead her astray? :-D

One of my grans insisted she didn't drink alcohol - only what she made herself - and that was 'different'.
Well, yes, Parsnip wine, Gorse wine, Nettle wine etc etc.(goodness knows how strong they were, but I got 'blotto' on 2 glasses) :-S

She certainly got her vitamin C - and lived to be 99!

When sister and I took her out - she drank beer.
I'm very similar - wine at home, ale in the pub - only I don't brew my own wine!

Dermot Report 2 Mar 2019 09:51

A friend of mine gave me
Ten little bottles of
Some special stuff that he
Had brewed up hisself

So I took it and hid it
Down in my basement
But my wife found out about it
And she told me to
Get rid of it or else

Since I didn't like the
Way she said, or else
I went down there and proceeded
To carry out her instructions

I set the ten little
Bottles on the drainboard
Picked up the first bottle
Pulled the cork out of it
And poured it down the sink
That is, all except one
Little swaller, which I drank

I picked up the next bottle
And I pulled the cork out of it
And I poured it down the sink
All except one little swaller
Which I drank

I picked up the next bottle
And I pulled the sink out of it
And I poured it down the sink
All except one little swaller
Which I drank

I picked up the next sink
And I pulled the bottle out of it
And I poured it down the cork
All except one little swaller
Which I drank

I picked up the next cork
And I pulled the sink out of it
And I poured it down the bottle
All except one teensy weensy
Little swaller, which I sank

I, I, I usually have a little
Difficulty with this number
You see I come from a
Great long line of stinkers
Uh, drinkers

I had an uncle that
Drank a quart a day
Every day of his life
Heck, me I spell more than that

No kidding
He could drink a quart
And not even stagger
Heck, he couldn't even move

We told him, we says
You better quit drinking that stuff
It's gonna kill you
Sure enough, it killed him
He died last year at the
Age of a hundred and two

Well, don't laugh
We dug him up last week
He looks better than y'all do now

A guy back here asked me, he says
What's the difference between
A drunk and an alchoholic
Well, I'll tell you
Us drunks don't have to attend all
Them dang old meetings, you know

I don't like your bartenders here
In Nashville, I'll tell you that
I says to this guy, give me
Something cold and full of gin
He says, take my wife

You see, you got me all confused
How many bottles have I got left
How many have I got, five
You're seeing double
There's only two and a half

I want you to know one other thing
You better not say nothing
Against my wife, buster
Cause I'll have you know
I'll have you know that I
Got the wifest nice in
The whole United States

Did the study reveal the size of the glass? Hic .....

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 2 Mar 2019 10:49

It gave it in ounces, I think. (US study)
Who weighs the amount of liquid a glass holds?
It would run off the scales! :-D

Maggie

That got me thinking about fluid ounces marked on the side of a measuring jug, so I had a look online for a definition...................

.............
For centuries, the fluid ounce did not have a consistent measurement and varied depending on the type of fluid being measured. For example, an ounce of wine was different in volume than an ounce of water. In the early 19th century, the British Parliament defined the imperial fluid ounce as 10 avoirdupois pounds of water, a French unit of liquid measurement.

The U.S. adopted the liquid volume that measures the wine gallon from the French as the standard U.S. liquid gallon. The U.S. liquid gallon is legally defined as 231 cubic inches, weighing about 8.34 pounds, and is exactly fluid 128 ounces......

....Much easier to count the glasses of whatever size !

That would be enough to make you drink...

Dermot Report 2 Mar 2019 11:53

Drink to me only with thine eyes
And I will pledge with mine.
Or leave a kiss within the cup
And I'll not ask for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sip,
I would not change for thine.
I sent thee late a rosy wreath,

Not so much hon'ring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be;
But thou thereon did'st only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me,
Since when it grows and smells, I swear
Not of itself, but thee.

as an aside, as far as I know, US petrol gallons are less in volume than UK gallons...
us gallon slightly less than 4 litres...
Uk gallon 4.54 litres

Bob, OMG, something the UK has that's bigger than that of the US.

Doesn't it crack a crease - :-D

Don't take this seriously as it's tongue-in-cheek characterisation. ;-)
