Hope you are all okay.

I have a small tree on Ancestry and the subscription is due to expire very soon.


I would love to be able to keep the tree format and information but not sure how.

Could someone advise me on how to save this to a CD or something like this?

Would be very grateful for some help.

The tree application is free you do not need a paid subscription.
you can also export it as a ged om file. It will be sent by email.

Surely if you export a gedcom file you have to have a family tree program to download it to ??

A Gedcom file is just a text file.
1. With GR open your tree
2. Choose export gedcom file from the menu
3. GR will send it to you as a, email attachment.
4.The gedcom file can be imported in to any of the free tree readers or services such as FMP and Ancestry.
warning: photos and such are not exported, only text.

How to export your data out of Ancestry.com
At the Ancestry.com Website, click on "Trees, then click on the name of the tree you want to export:
Click on "Tree Settings":
Find the "Manage your tree" section, click on "Export tree":
Click on "Download your GEDCOM file". ...
You will be prompted to save the file:

On Ancestry:
Select Trees
Then select Create & Manage Trees
Select Manage Tree
Then Click on Export Tree


As Rollo says there are no photos or records stored on a GEDCOM. So all the census images etc will not be preserved so you need to save them individually.

Although you will still be able to see your tree after your subscription expires, you will not be able to see the records and images, so you need to save them.

Depending on just how many records you have on your tree, it may be worth purchasing the latest version of Family Tree Maker which allows you to synchronise your FTM tree with your ancestry tree. That way the records and photos are also stored on your PC and the whole tree can be backed up easily.

It is probably better to use a USB drive rather than a CD or DVD for backing up.

And don't forget this site. When you have your .ged from Ancestry, you can upload it on to GR.

But whatever you do, decide which is to be your prime/main tree. The one you have on Ancestry, or one somewhere else (GR/FTM [if you buy it]/some other program). That should then be the only one that you actually maintain. In the past I tried to keep my tree on here and one on Ancestry both updated. But they soon went out of sync. So now I export a .ged from GR and upload it to Ancestry as a copy.

Although no images can be transferred in a .ged, any notes on my GR tree are included and get uploaded into Ancestry.

I have a lot of information that I did not print off,
like details held on the electoral rolls.
