My uncle Arthur Frederick Joslin was born 1910 in the above premises.
Does anyone know what this building was -It no longer exists -now housing

Do you think St Brelade was simply the name of the house at Warley Mount where your uncle was born? There was a mental hospital at Warley but I don’t think it ever went by the name St Brelade. In 1910 it was known as the Essex County Lunatic Asylum.

My bet is on the house in Warley Mount having a name rather than a number. Have you checked where your uncle was in the 1911 census?

The Essex Record Office has a sale catalogue including that property dated 1914

Looking at the 1911 census it seems to have been an ordinary dwelling place, as only the one family living there. I found this record by ADDRESS search, not by looking for the family.

Previous census images were for 2, The Chase, and 10, Myrtle Rd. The two following census entries were for Warwick,Warley Mount, and " Kirkham" Warley Chase, so it looks like some houses were individually named.

The same address in 1901 . The house names for Warley Mount are in brackets, Warwick, Kirkham, St Brelade etc.

11 rooms in 1911 so of a decent size.

St Bredale is an area on Jersey so looks like Charles C Maistre is the person most likely to have named the house.

I think Pat might be on to something with the naming - see where the head of house hold at "Kirkham" comes from...

thanks to all that have replied - It does seem to be a large house - I imagine my grandfather must have rented the property- I would not thought he could have afforded to have purchased the property. His occupation was a carman - what that was - He certainly could ride horses- have photos of him in the WW1 sitting on a horse . He also served in the Boer War another picture of him in the Cape looking like he is in the cavalry .

A Carman was someone who drove a horse & cart for delivering goods.

Perhaps the house was sub-let into rooms or used to house employees?
