My son got one last week doing 35 in a 30 zone
unfamiliar road out of town
That wasn't sign posted

easily done, my local council have removed a short stretch of 50mph, that was between two lengths of 40....merely by removing the 50 signs!! my sat nav insists that the 50mph is still present

Changing the subject sightley the driver of the Kia has spoken to the daily mirror in spite of police asking her not to I can smell a big fat cheque coming her way, think it very distestful also the press should now leave it alone

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 20 Jan 2019 14:11

There are extremely dangerous stretches of provincial A roads all over the country eg A35 Dorset - Exeter, A1 Lincs, A354 Dorchester - Yeoivil, A44 and A465 Wales ( Heads of Valleys ) A64 York A31 Bere Regis - Guildford, A3 Portsmouth - London A130 Essex and plenty more. All of these roads have two things in common (a) long stretches of fairly straight road inviting drivers to put their foot down and ( b ) lots of hazards for the unwary driver such as the unexpected arrival of tractors, slow moving trucks, blind brows of hills and of course Range Rovers.

The accident record of these roads is getting steadily worse.

Given that significant road improvements are unlikely the best solution is to reduce the national speed limit for single carriageway roads to 50 mph and non motorway dual carriageways to 60 mph.

It takes two to have a collision and it is a rare thing that only one is guilty.
If the MPV had been driven correctly then there would have been tyre marks from heavy braking laid down on the road. There were none visible on the TV footage.

It is perfectly possible to get around in a quick and efficient manner without getting speeding tickets or having accidents. The key to this is road awaress and anticipation not something much seen in UK drivers. Over the last 30 years the number of accidents haas gone up while the deaths and injuries to drivers have gone down. This is entirely due to safer vehicles. When it comes to pedestrians and cyclists fatalities and serious injury have gone up sharply.

IMHO the driving test should also include a personality test. Some operators of HGV and public transport already do that.

Bob - you are correct. My mistake but my point is that nothing is done about speeding
until there have been fatalities.
It has now taken a high profile case to change this on this road. Apparently it was due to be discussed on friday.

not the police... local council, methinks...

Von

Von Report 20 Jan 2019 11:51

Whatever the ins and outs of this case there have been several fatalities on this road in the last 6 years. Only now have the police considered lowering the speed limit.

Sorry Joy for not sticking to topic but how many others need to die on our roads before something is done
Both the Prince and the other occupants were lucky to have escaped alive.

Well he's in trouble again - driving on the public roads since his accident without his seatbelt on. Police have had words. :-0 Several press reports.

HM will have to have words. :-S

Edit the photo was on the Sandringham estate but he'd just turned off the public road into the estate according to the 3 articles I've just read.

I’m not a driver because I have had Petti mal since I was four but that does not mean that my husband did not drive an young son in laws where I have been a passenger, first the Queen I think is the only person in the country that does not have to hold a driving licence or a passport but every other royal including Prince Philip as to wearing seat belts everyone including the Queen should be seen to wearing one if for nothing else for a example that it’s the law. If this was jo blog on the local news and and all over in a few days give it a rest press and let the police do their work. Just my thoughts

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 20 Jan 2019 10:18

I had the feeling that statistics were gauged on hour-for-hour driving by older and younger drivers and not on numbers of drivers.

Put simply one older driver driving for an hour, say, is less likely to have an accident than one young driver driving for an hour.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 20 Jan 2019 09:34

Of course the 20-29 year olds are going to have more accidents. To start with, there’ll be more of them. Neither will they have had the opportunity of building up experience.

Statistically there will be fewer drivers in the upper age groups. Either they’ve died, recognised their physical/cognitive limitations or can no longer afford the expense of owning a car.

As a percentage I would suggest that more of upper age group drivers are likely to *cause* an accident because others have had to take avoiding action.

A compulsory re-test over a certain age, perhaps in a simulator, would be preferable. However, who would pay for it?

That article is in an Australian newspaper and goes against the reports here from the people who ran to help

Prince Phillip was most concerned that the others were ok

He is reported to be resting up and under observation so it's unlikely he is out driving again so soon

It's just thank good no one was killed

Edit well seems the silly old fool WAS caught driving without seat belt
He hasn't learned anything
