Thanks to the suggestions from people on here I have found where my mums baby was buried he died after only being born for a couple of hours in 1957 I contacted the cemetery where he is they gave me a plot number and have emailed me a plan of the cemetery but it says he is in a public grave what does that mean and would my mum be allowed to put flowers and possibly a cross with his name on.

A public grave means it's not privately owned and will have no markers

They used to be known as paupers graves

My paternal grandmother is in a public grave with 7 other unrelated persons
She died in 1907

The council was able to give me the plot and grave nos and the cemetery manager took me to the area . It's just a big area grassed over but as it's municipal he was able to walk out the rows and say where the plot was
I was able to put flowers down and as I don't live in the area was told they would remove them when they had died off

Don't think on a public grave you can put any markers though

The cemetery and or the council will advise you

My Dad's public grave has his name on it.

Sue
It's unusual for a public grave to have any markers

What about the others buried in the same grave ,have they markers too ?

If the marker is just a temporary marker ( a wooden cross for instance) and not a permanently erected headstone then most cemeteries don't mind this.
