I love maps and I took one my copy of an old OS map to show a friend today. She too, was enchanted by it.

I have my Army Cert of Education 1st class in map reading, written and practical. I also love them, have hundreds, and can read them like a book.

Have you come across the Gough Map?

Love maps, have a lot of old National Geographic maps from around the world.

I love maps.

We bought a large book of world maps when we first came over here, on a special deal for some organization, and both of us spent hours poring over it.

Then it got put on the "large books shelf", and rarely looked at ...........

until daughter's husband came with her for their first visit after they married.

We found him sitting in a comfortable chair with the map book open on his knee, completely absorbed in it!

I was pleased to learn that my nephew too will enjoy looking at a map, as others would a book. Maybe his daughter in turn will inherit this love.

A lot of my one inch O.S. maps are in the local primary school at the moment. I loaned them to show contrasting areas, eg South Wales valleys with all the contours compared to more local Romney Marsh and all it's low land and thin blue threads of drainage dykes.

Hopefully the children will have enjoyed browsing them and spotting given features.

An elderly relative's house was recently being sorted, so I've just acquired a collection of Ordnance Survey maps, mostly of Scotland.

That should keep me busy for a while and hopefully a bit more informed.
I'm not too good on Scottish geography, so maybe these will improve that.

My Father's home town. Shows many locations long since demolished.

I love old maps. Especially when road names are spelled differently. It helps to understand their origin. Most farms I know, every field, wood, copse etc. has a name, and you would be surprised at the number of farmers who don't know why they are so-called.

There are Old and Middle English dictionaries and lexicons available on-line.

If you have the time, patience and propensity to do so, it is possible to have a bash at deciphering some of those names.

I was at a craft fayre today and was chatting to a regular. He sells old medals and coins etc and today I noticed he had 4 maps for sale. One of them was an old OS map of Brighton & Hove.

I immediately thought of you Sharron.

If I should see him again, would you like it. It was only £2.00 but im willing to send it to you.I think there is another fayre in 2 weeks time. I cant remember the other areas though, I should have written them down.
