I slice the centers out of my Cabbages

and four smaller heads start to grow
in the place of the large heads
Keeps us and the rabbit I Cabbage

When I had an allotment back in the 80's the ground was either sodden or baked dry.

Off topic, I was watching part of a gardening programme last where vegetables were being grown for show. There some massive cabbages, took 3 men to lift them, and leeks about the size of your leg (in part)

It's usually too much heat with little water followed by too much rain than splits the head

They need consistent heat and watering

From an article about cabbage I found by using Google

• Heads split and crack. Too much water; too much nitrogen. Keep plants evenly moist; avoid wetting and drying soil. Do not overwater. If plants go dry, apply water slowly at first. Prune roots to slow uptake of water and slow growth; do this by turning the head a half turn to break off some of the roots and slow growth. Feed plants will aged compost; avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Harvest plants when they are mature; do not allow them to sit too long in the garden.
