Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 27 Sep 2018 22:22

We had a wonderful holiday at the hotel Jazz Aquaviva which is at makadi bay in the Hurghada area of Egypt

Great hotel with its own water park that grandson and SIL loved

We did a sea trip seeing dolphins and snorkelling from the boat in the Red Sea to see the wonderful variety of fish and coral

I didn't swim though cos I wouldn't have been able to get back on board on the metal ladders

Family did other trips like quad biking and riding a camel
We left that to the men of our party

Was hoping to do the trip to Luxor to the valley of the kings to see some tombs and temples but it was a 16 hour day and too much walking and the tour operators didn't recommend I did it so I stayed at the hotel and the family went . They said was a wonderful trip but very tiring in intense heat

But despite all the precautions with sanitizer and hand wipes used constantly several of us got the Egyptian trots!! In the first week

We thought it was the different food and the spices used and we mostly coped with it

BUT I am still having problems. We flew back Monday evening getting into Gatwick in the early hours. Blimey what a difference in temperature.we left in heat of 30 plus to get back to 5 c and frost.

Since then I have real problems . Get the feel need the loo and making a quick run to the downstairs loo only not to make it on lots of occasions

Rang the doc this morning and have to have bloods and stool analysis not that I have some lol .

All in all it's spoiled a great holiday

I went to Tennerife in the mid 80s and had"tummy upset". When I got back to England, I had it for another 7 days. Turns out it was the ice in our drinks!

Florence
It's the indignity of keep pooing yourself that is embarrassing even though no one else knows but having to tell the doc what's happening

Even picking up the pets from their holiday hotels but having problems there too and having to explain OMG. But folks have been ok no problems get here when you can

Florence ............ it was the ice in the punch bowl that got me in Russia back in 1975

I was soooooooooo careful, but forgot the ice.

I did wonder when I saw a small block in one punch bowl with a cockroach embedded in it ............... butt he damage had been done by theh!

We were at a very big international conference, and I went to see the medical office on site, which led to me being put into a car with an interpreter to be taken to a medical clinic.

The interpreter was a young women eager to practise talking English 'cos she wanted a job at the Moscow Olympics. The driver must have been FGB ........ he spent the whole time leaning back so he could hear what we talked about. She didn't seem to care, but I was very careful in my responses.

At the medical clinic, the female doctor took me behind a screen to examine me, while the interpreter sat on the other side translating question and answer back and forth.

I ended up with some horrid horse pills! I decided not to take any!

I did get better quite quickly!

Shirley ......... hope you get better soon and that you haven't picked up any real nasties

It's nearly always the ice! I went to Egypt a long time ago and stayed with a friend who was working at the FCO. When I saw the precautions she took, soaking tomatoes in Milton solution etc., we were very careful. I did have ice in a drink whilst out once or twice, as I love it, but luckily we were OK. I'm usually the one who has the opposite problem on holidays and have to eat lots of plums.

Hope you feel better soon.

One reason I wouldn't go to Egypt or places as hot where you don't know their health regulations. mainly these days, Unless bugs are taken in by other visitors, places in the EU including the Canaries are ok. We mainly avoid ice and salads but ice in the Canaries is not usually from machines/local water it is bottled water brought in in packs and we did have it a couple of times with no problem. However I did have a mild problem this year ( not bad and only half a day with tummy pains) we put it down to the only tap water we were using which was boiled for tea. so we then used boiled bottled water for the tea and I was fine.Tomatoes I wash in bottled water both in Canaries and Spain and any other salad if we buy them, only eat peeled fruit.

Another thing we avoid is buffet food if we can and if we can't only eat hot food that has to be served with spoons etc (not fingers).

You only have to read the reports like the recent one from Israel where people actually died and E Coli has been found in a 5 star hotel to see their hygiene is different.

We had no problems on the cruise we went on and din't hear of anyone with problems but their hygiene was very good. And buffet food was served with spoons/tongs and servers wearing gloves.

I hope it clears up soon Shirley.

I hope you will soon be feeling a lot better Shirley.

Even in this country there have been problems with ice, due to poor hygiene.
I hate ice in drinks anyway.

When we lived in Cyprus in the 70s, we often ate out at quite small establishments, but were never ill. Once in Famagusta, when my parents were out on holiday, we went to a family restaurant we knew. The owner was thrilled that we had brought visitors and showed Mum and I behind the scenes. It was absolutely spotless and so tidy, even though it had been quite busy. Mum was most impressed and said that she doubted that many establishments here would want anyone to see kitchen areas.
Standards can be set, even in quite lowly places.

Barbara whenever I have been sick or had a bug and no appetite, I always enjoy a plain fruit ice lolly. It does settle the stomach and is a way of getting fluids back in if you don't feel like drinking much.

Hope you are improved now Shirley
