the ancestry version of the 1939 Register is not, IMHO, as good as the FMP one now is.

FMP got it first, transcribed it, and released it about 2/3 years ago.

You ahve to realise that the 1939 Register formed the basis of the NHS when that came in in 1947, so the NHS continued the updating of deaths and women's marriages (ie, changes of name) that had been done throughout WW2. The NHS did that until mid-1991, when records were computerised.

Records of anyone who is younger than 100 years old and for which there was no record of death before 1991 HAD to be blacked out, the usual privacy reasons.

FMP has slowly been opening those records as a) their staff have matched 1939 entries with bmds, and b) members have sent in proof of someone's death (eg, death certificate).

No changes have been made to women's surnames.

FMP still has many blacked out records .............. for example, we know many people have emigrated and died overseas, therefore there is no record of their deaths in the UK.

Example ............. my aunt and uncle were born in 1895 and ca 1900 respectively, emigrated to Australia in the early 60s and died down under .......... their records and those for their children are still blacked out. I'm not about to buy Australian death certificates for them, plus I've found a blacked out family living where they lived when I knew the address in the 1950s.


Ancestry came late to the table (FMP had sole control for a certain period of time), and has the original version of the Register, ie, with the updates down only to ca mid-1991.

The 1921 website actually says:
"The ruling by the Information Commissioner that resulted in the 1911 Census for England and Wales being opened early does not apply to the 1921 Census because, unlike the 1911 Census, the 1921 Census was conducted under the 1920 Census Act, which is still in force and which contains a statutory prohibition on disclosure.

The stated government position from the ONS is "its intention to release the entirety of the 1921 Census returns in 2022, in accordance with the non-statutory '100 year rule' which was adopted to reflect this undertaking of confidentiality".

Despite numerous protestations and challenges, the Government seems to be firmly sticking to the 100 year rule. One reason could of course be that if a census does go ahead in 2021 then there would have to be strong promises of confidentiality and that would not sit easily alongside the government suddenly releasing the 1921 census early when the promise was made at the time that the information on individuals would never be made public."

Since you were last here the 1939 registration has come online. Sometimes that can be a big help and many people have access as it is part of FMP and Ancestry packages.

Do you mean the 1921 census?
The legal terms of the Act make early release impossible.
Once it is released Ay and others will take at least 6 months to transcribe it. Expect to shell out.

The 1931 census was allegedly destroyed, 1941 cancelled, 100 year wait 1951-2011. Cameron's govt abolished future census. Idiot.

Not as far as anyone is aware. Even if it’s released in Jan 2022, it’ll take a while before it’s been transcribed.

Hi I haven't been here for years! I'll health and family and no work has kept me!! What I would like to know is.......... Is there any talk of releasing the 2021 census early as they did with the last one
