After a really awful year for both my and my partner's families we have now had one lovely bit of good news.

OH's daughter is getting married :-D and they are planning to have the ceremony at the Guildhall in Winchester and the 'do' at her partner's parent's home which is some 20 mins away.

I bet Maggie will know, but anyone's comments welcome, as to any drawbacks to the Guildhall in late November? This will be 2019.

Also they intend to house hunt, to buy, in Winchester so are there any areas it would be better to avoid?

Many thanks in advance
Chris

The Guildhall is really nice. :-D
Lots of bus and coach stops just down the road.

As for buying - very expensive!

Maggie

Thank you for that.

I have obviously 'Googled' the Guildhall and it does look lovely. I was a bit worried about parking for all the guests at the ceremony seeing it was near Christmas and the Guildhall website doesn't mention about having their own parking. Is there a problem in late November with Christmas shopper parking? :-(

I did think the property would be expensive, but they seem to have set their hearts on the town :-D.........Anywhere you would suggest definitely avoid buying?

Thank you so much
Chris

Probably best to use the Park & Ride.
£3 a day for up to 7 in a car, and the bus stops just down from the Guildhall - whichever park & ride you use.
Very frequent buses - every 7 minutes or so - unlike where I live, just off the Park & ride - one an hour :-|

Have PM'd you about where to avoid :-D (obviously not where I live) :-D

Edit: Be aware of when the Park & ride stops:

"The Park and Ride (P&R) buses run from 06.25 until 19.52 Monday to Friday and from 06.55 to 18.51 on Saturdays. The last buses back from town to the car parks run at approximately 19.30 on a Weekday and 18.30 on a Saturday. Please check on the timetable for specific stop details and timings.

The bus route runs between the East Winchester car parks and the South Winchester car park (via Pitt car park), with stops in the City Centre, Railway Station and along Romsey Road. There is no Park and Ride bus service on Sundays or Bank Holidays."

If you may need to get a taxi back to the Park & Ride (taxi's outside the Guildhall), the 'Bar End' - St Catherine's and Barfield parks (East Park & Ride parks) are nearer town

Elizabeth

Thank you so much for your good wishes :-D

My mum is now 87 and unfortunately is one of the reasons we are having a bad year :-( She is in poor physical health and has also just been formally diagnosed with dementia and her decline has been very fast in that area.

That photo was taken around the time she met my dad, 1954ish, and even though I am biased, I think she was, if not a classical beauty, certainly quite stunning.

Maggie

Thank you, I will read your message with interest but probably tomorrow as it is way past my bedtime :-0

Park and Ride sounds good, wedding planned for a Friday, as a lot of the friends of the couple will be coming from all over the country and it will save them from panicking on the day as they will only be staying the night of the wedding. Family will be taking over hotels and guesthouses for at least two nights....So I might be back for recommendations, if you don't mind ;-)

Many thanks
Chris

Congratulations to the happy couple.

Once dates are fixed be sure to book accommodation quite soon, as Winchester gets really busy with the Christmas Market right next to the Cathedral from around 20 November..
