Foolhardiness and Greed are often neck and neck in the lead while Commonsense falls by the wayside

So you opened an e-mail which had potentially evil consequences?
An ah ha moment.
Curioisty killed the cat.

Emails will be fine unless you open any attachments or reply to them; phone calls are fine unless you press any buttons to talk to someone or to take you off the list.

Was it an email though??

Oh if life was so simple.

A popular way of hiding evil stuff is to embed it within an innocent attachment.
Thus the email scan shows the document to be ok but when the document is opened boom. A variation is to wait for a few hours / days. That is how the NHS was brought down. Of course the payload may not be hostile per se but will plant itself and quietly report back to base. The Americans brought down a chunk of the Iraninan h-bomb development that way. And so on ...

Not surprisingly eMail providers eg Outlook are getting tetchy and tend to block safe stuff which is needed.

The real fix would be for the networks to shift to ipv6. Many business LANs have already done so but it needs a universal move.
