Better to save a little money by renewing if you have a low sub, and think you will or might return ;-)

Patricia

Patricia Report 30 Aug 2018 22:18

Thanks SylvainCanada - I guess that's made my mind up.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Aug 2018 20:25

Patricia .............

don't wonder about it ..... that IS what GR will do.

It's been posted above that the current cheapest sub (Standard) is £19.95 a year or £14.95 for 6 months.

If you do not renew within 1 month of the end of your current sub, then you WILL be charged that amount .......

......... and you might even be charged the higher amount if you do wait until after the end of your sub but still within that month. I remember someone having that problem a couple years ago.

Patricia

Patricia Report 30 Aug 2018 09:02

Thanks Quinsgran - I did wonder about that. I've still got a little while before I decide for definite, so lots of things to weigh up. :-S

Patricia
Since you have been a member since 2003 you are paying the cheap yearly rate as long as you are continuous. If you did decide to leave for a time I’m sure GR will charge you the 6 month rates which work out more than double

Thanks Sue. I'm not going to delete, I've done too much work to lose it all, but thanks for your advice. <3

Patricia,Don't delete your account/tree.
Just walk away for a few months and come back when you feel like doing a bit on your tree.
Good Luck in what you decide to do.

DET posted ..........

"Sharron - it sounds very much as if you are 'Grandfathered'. Sylvia in Canada has mentioned something like £4.95 before. There's no rhyme or reason why even the protected fees are different."
------------

It's actually £8.96, and I've paid that for about the last 10 or so years. There is not rhyme or reason to what we're all paying, except that those who have been continuous members since about 2006/7 are paying much lower fees than the new rates.

We were grandfathered in when ITV took over GR back in 2007, and immediately raised the rates, but not for those who were already members.

It was about £5/year when I first joined back in 2004, but rose gradually over the next couple of years..

But, yes .............. if you do not renew your sub, you drop down to the Free Membership level, and then you have to pay whatever the new rate is if you return either to Platinum or Standard.

At one point the Standard subscription was around £19.95 for 6 months, though I see from Andysmum post above that it is now £19.95 per year.

Note that if you are one of the people who took out a Gold subscription, and still are on it, that Gold no longer exists so if you do not renew that, then you will not be able to join that level again.

This is what the different tariffs allow you to do. (Taken from the Help/Faqs section above)

It is free to register with Genes Reunited. Here are some of the things you can do once you have registered:

• you can build your family tree using our online tree builder
• you can search the names on the site to find possible matches with the names in your tree
• you can upload photos and scanned images to your Keepsafe and attach these images to relations in your family tree
• you can reply to any messages sent to you by other members
• if you already have experience in researching your family history you can import your Gedcom file in to your Genes Reunited family tree

We offer 2 types of subscription – standard and platinum. A description of each one is shown below.

You’ll be able to see how much each one costs when you click on to the Subscription page. We show the price in different currencies depending on where you live. If you are currently subscribed, you'll only see the options available to you. The link to subscribe can be found in the top right hand corner of the page.

Platinum Membership

This is available for either one month or a year (£19.95/£79.95).

Features include:

• Contact other members from your search results

• Accept invitations to view their trees

• Post photos and scanned images such as certificates to your Keepsafe, and attach these images to relations in your tree

• Add messages to the message boards

You also get access to these records

• Indexed birth, marriage and death records from 1837 - 2006

• England and Wales Census records from 1841 to 1911

• Scottish census from 1841 to 1901

• Overseas birth, marriage and death records

• UK Electoral Roll information for 2002-2013

If you want to broaden your search, as a Platinum member you can buy additional access to more record sets, including

• Military records

• Parish records

• Travel and Overseas records

• British Newspaper Archive content

Standard Membership

This is available for either £4.95 per month or you can buy a six monthly package at £14.95 or an annual package at £19.95 .

You’ll enjoy the same features as the Platinum package, but you only get access to the non-indexed births, marriage and death records. You can buy credits to access the rest of the records if you want to take your search further.

And if you’re curious to know more, but not sure you want to subscribe yet, you can register and build your family tree for free and buy Pay Per View credits to view records. They cost £5 for 50 credits or £17.95 for 200 credits and give you access to all of our records. You can purchase credits here.

I myself have left & then come back while away my information was still on site .but to join again cost more than just keeping your membership going if you just have standard membership worth staying on & you can just look in or not but all your info will be safe check how much subscription charges are. GR will tell you hope this Helps Barbara

Patricia Report 28 Aug 2018 11:26

Thanks everyone; I'm probably more confused than ever, but at the same time reassured that I won't lose everything. I might email GR to see what the different tariffs allow me to do.

I've got basic membership and just paid £8.96 to renew, although I thinks this varies for some reason. I have my tree on here and use this board occasionally but don't use any of the lookups etc. Your tree will stay even if you do not renew, unless you delete it.

Sharron

Sharron Report 28 Aug 2018 11:14

I have never considered leaving but feel I am not going to be wasting very much if I don't avail myself of it for a time.

Sharron Report 28 Aug 2018 11:06

I have never used Genes to look anything up.

Was always on Ancestry and FMP but not on any at the moment because I had to pay to have that bedspread quilted.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 28 Aug 2018 11:00

In answer to 'what does a basic subscription consist of?'

Post on the boards.
Send messages to other members. This would include those who own 'purple star' tree matches.
You can use the record search facilities, but not view the details of the results.
Add to your tree ( you can do that as a Free member anyway)
View trees opened to you, which you can't if you're 'free'.

Sharron - it sounds very much as if you are 'Grandfathered'. Sylvia in Canada has mentioned something like £4.95 before. There's no rhyme or reason why even the protected fees are different. I paid £17.96 last September, including a 10%? discount. It used to be about the same as you're paying but then I was given a years free upgrade to Platinum for taking part in one of their customer consultations at their offices.

Sharron

Sharron Report 28 Aug 2018 10:49

I must be grandfathered I think. Even so, it is less than 50p a week.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 28 Aug 2018 10:45

You'd be treated as a new member if you downgrade from Platinum or resubscribe after a break. As many of us have 'Grandfathered' rates, they won't be the same.

Its possible the standard rate as you're suggesting is something like £19.95 pa.

Sharron

Sharron Report 28 Aug 2018 10:39

Less than a tenner I think, mine just renews automatically and I am not sure what you get from it because I only really ever use this board but I did put my tree on here once.

It must tell you somewhere, not that I have ever bothered to look.

Sorry, I have never been a lot of use for anything.
