Today is the Summer Solstice, or the longest day of the year.

The Sun is at the height of its power. From then on, it will gradually wane.

Hello Elizabeth,

I purposely chose our holiday dates early this month to take advantage of the longer days. 21st June has special memories for me nowadays, as it's the date my son proposed to his fiancee, 4 years ago now.

I'd be interested in an explanation as to why the longest day(light) isn't at the end of June and the shortest at the end of Decenber. It seems to be about 10 days out.

Is it something to do with the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1582? But if so what does the Gregorian calender line up to?
