If they have been buying at prices that allowed them to sell for a pound

profiably, it was just a matter of time Joy.

If the employees didn't see it coming, no warning it is certainly a shame for them.

Rent, mortgage, sundry debts, gas, electricity food etcetera.

Poundland's financial problem becomes a major crisis for their employees.

Poundland has been the place to shop for people already in that position and there are plenty of those now.

Maybe they could not afford all those things after all.

It's Pound World that is in trouble not Poundland.
Two different organisations ;-)

I have just seen this on the news and came back on-line to rectify the thread.

Poundland's problems are shared by many marginal retail businesses as the recent demise of Maplin and ToysRUs shows.

On the one side they have retail fixed costs - PAYE/NI, council tax, landlord rents and on the other much of the stock is imported which was ok ore referendum but now with the soggy pound an insoluble conundrum. No amount of shifting the armchairs will change any of this as the absence of even Guy Hands suggests.

Lidls and Aldi are strong enough on the continent to be able to control their own futures. For the likes of marginal operators trying to square the circle prospects are poor. Much the same is true for their customers.

Amazon is eating the UK retail economy / tax base alive cheered on by the Tories. Liam Fox plans for lots more of the same.

We buy lots of bits in the pound shops. Is the one that is in trouble the one that switched to having different pricing other than a pound for everything? They seemed to lose custom as soon as they did that because people didn’t know where they were with them having to watch what they picked up thinking it was everything a pound then being charged more at the till.

Ann I dare not even take the Butler in there
He buys anything he gets his hands on

Pens paper card anything crafty
He just fills the Basket
Then he fills the kitchen with His creations :-( :-(

Or he buys Gadgets that I hide in Garage Unused ;-)
