Is it possible for a woman who was married to a Newman who died in 1900 & then married a Chandler to be deceased as Newman? It is a right conundrum.

Her death should be registered in the name from her second marriage. However it all depends on what information the informant gave at the time.

I am looking for a rose/rosa chandler born 1853 in West Grinstead. I don,t know when she died but others have a rose newman dying in 1917 in steyning. I'm just not sure about this.

If so, then perhaps they didn't actually marry as the image says they have been married 27 years, but you say Mr. Newman only died in 1900.

Rose married George Tyler Chandler in 1904. In 1911 she was living with son Alfred & his wife Annie in Nep Town, Henfield. I do have the certificate for Rose & George's marriage.
Alfred & Annie were living in Chanctonbury in 1939 and there is one other with them.

I don't think it is Rosa who is the closed record on the 1939 register as on the image you can see what looks like the "tail end" of a "y" or a "j" or some other letter that drops below the line.

Her death really should be under the name of Chandler.

Thanks to all of you who have tried to help me find my Gt. Grandmother's death. I will be looking at the possibility that she married again although she was knocking on a bit but that's no obstacle even in those days.

I wonder if the Brighton death in 1929 where it gives the name Rosa H. Chandler could have been mistranscribed from Rosa N. Chandler - if the informant wanted to acknowledge her previous name of Newman. Just a thought really. The year of birth is certainly right and it's in the right area.

However the GRO index gives the full name and it's not Newman:

Phyll, this is an aside, but I found out my gran was in prison on the 1939 register.
My finding it was purely by accident.
On being imprisoned, upon being asked her surname - she gave 4 different ones! :-D :-D :-D :-D
Three I knew - her maiden name (the 'real' one she had at the time of imprisonment)
The name of the man who was possibly my father's father (whose address she gave as her 'abode')
The name of the man she married when my father's possible father was killed in the war.
A.N Other - possibly the man of 'bad influence' that led her to being imprisoned n the first place!!!

She was also fined for having a dog with no licence, and having an 'unmasked' light on her car.

I also know, she used to send my dad to private schools.
When the final demand came for the fees, she removed him, and registered him at another school, under a different name!

Gran was a lovely lady, though. When I knew her, she had a smallholding, and tickled her pigs every day, before letting them out in the field :-D :-D
When dad was about 16, she 'took in' a 2 year old boy she found wandering the streets (with the approval of his parents).

She also decided, aged about 65, that she had kidney disease, so she gave up her smallholding, and toured the country raising money for Kidney disease - she won an award for the money she raised . It transpired, however, that she didn't have any kidney disease :-D :-D :-D

So, basically, anything's possible!!! :-D :-D :-D
