I have a 'rough' tree going back another 5 generations from my great x 13 grandmother. I like researching the female line - the chances of a woman being the mother of her baby are more likely than a particular man being the father!

The last couple are William Carminow, (1355 - 1407), who married Margaret Kelly (1372 - 1420).
I use all sorts of sources to try to verify they are who I think they are - and thought 'Margaret Kelly' who married William Carminow may be difficult to confirm heritage-wise, I thought she may be Irish.

Not so. Please doff your caps to Lady Margaret Baroness Tresolyth Kelly, daughter of Isabella (of Hampshire) and Sir John Kelly (of Devon) who married Sir William Lord Tresolyth Carmynowe Carminow.

Well now. That's really grand.!

My lot were busy digging up ' taties' in Sussex or Herefordshire, so I guess you'll expect a curtsey if we meet up again.!

Unfortunately there was a 'rogue' one, who lost the family fortune before the 19th Century :-|
This is the Cornish side - through my dad's mum's grandmother (Truran).
No-one is quite sure who dad (and his sister's) father was - though we have our suspicion!

One side of my Hampshire lot began life on the New Forest - as travellers, then squatters.
The Suffolk side - well g gran moved to Hampshire from Suffolk after having a baby out of wedlock - then going on to have 10 more, before marrying!
The rest of the Suffolk lot didn't move far from Middleton Moor - or if they did, they ended up back there, or in Aldeburgh :-S

So, quite an eclectic mix. :-D :-D :-D

I might tell you, my great-grandfather was the Duke of Dumpford.

Gervais Hornacote (born in the 1108's) - William's great x something grandfather (through a female) was born in Tintagel Castle.

One of the Carminow's had an argument with another family (the Scrope's of Wensleydale) in 1360, about their coats of arms - apparently they were the same.
Scrope argued that he had used the coat of arms since William the Conquerer, Carminow argued that they'd used the coat of arms 'since the time of King Arthur' - and were descended from him! :-S
It was decided they could both use the coat of arms.

Ah but some think they're grander than they are, at least you haven't lost your common touch :-D

I just find it fascinating - it's so much easier finding things out when they're aristocrats :-D
I didn't think the 'ladies' would be so easy to trace, though.
I still love the fact that a few generations were Justices of the peace, Mayors, MP's - and Pirates as a 'sideline'. :-D :-D :-D

I can trump that .... Scottish royalty .... gypsy of course :-D

Dumpford is a tiny hamlet near Midhurst and my great-grandfather was a farm labourer there. The probably named him the Duke because he was so rough!

Margaret Kelly lived a long long time ;-) :-D

I've changed it from 1372 - 1820, to 1420!!

Mind you, I have a few long-lived ancestors - but not for 448 years :-D :-D :-D

Just realised, instead of telling the truth - that I was named after my gran's sister who died when she was 4, (I wasn't expected to survive)
I could say I was named after another ancestor - namely
Lady Margaret Baroness Tresolyth Kelly/Carminow! :-D :-D :-D

Not that you'll let it get to your head or anything Ma'am :-D

Come off it, I've got an avatar of my mum in a 'utility' suit and slippers on a motorbike (though it may be a Norton, or a BSA - will have to ask my brother)!! :-D :-D

Ah but even dear old Liz fixed trucks in the war dressing up in common workmen clothes LOL.....rich families often have their interesting members don't they :-D
