I joined GR several years ago to build on my family tree. Pleased to report I have
had help and joined in several chat threads.

Oh I see, thank you. Trouble is with the loss of members, that sadly hardly any one these days seem to take their place, whereas years ago, they did, giving a good turn over of different posters. It's a pity!

The owners of GR, and FMP since about 2009/2010, (and once upon a time the owners of the right to Scotland's People).

Magpie

I have a feeling GR might well stay more or less as it is ............. little support from GR but lots of genealogy help from members.

OR it will revert to what it was when it first began ............ and just stuttering along.

As for loss of members .............. many have died, others have lost interest, quite a few were driven away by various happenings, and others have to think every year whether they want to remain.

The takeover by brightsolid was the death knell for the GR as once known ............. and I'm not shy in saying that I forecast what would happen!

When I first joined the site in 2010 there were many many more people posting than there are now. Perhaps people are now going onto Facebook, or the other FREE chat sites?!! The site imo is a bit of a shadow of its former self so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see an amalgamation!!

I have to disagree with you about the use of the genealogy thread column.
Personally since the date you mention I have posted under page title IRVINE/threadcatcher and Grandfather's second wife.

Success was also this year you are not reading the threads but the stickies that stay there as they have info for you in that thread. :-)

That's a relief !

My access is so random and haphazard. I'll just blame Google.

I still like the format of GenesR for its ease of use, and it's my quick 'Go-to' whenever I want to check, or add family info, despite feeling nostalgic for the layout I used when I first joined in the dim dark past.

Best wishes to all users, and thanks, SylvialCanada!

yes!!!

There seems to be only one GR staff member, but there are still plenty of members around ....... and that is one message that I haven't had, and I am on here a couple of times a day!

I keep getting the message that the 'page cannot be found'. Is Genes still in existence?

Genealogy Chat is still used a lot, but I think you've noticed the 'stickied' posts at the top, if you scroll down past those there are current postings :-)

But GR admin no longer update on Success or Announcement board, the only time admin are involved is when complaints are made to them. All the attention and money goes on Findmypast ( same parent company, same office, MUCH better records for the money).

I personally think it's only a matter of time before the whole of GR is merged into FMP, though they may just keep it as is, boards that members can post on and get help, and can check for people in trees etc

JackyJ1593 Report 9 Jan 2018 17:23

I have had a look at the boards that come under the Community heading and noticed the following:
Announcement board - nothing from GR since August 2015
Success stories - nothing since June 2014
Genealogy chat - nothing since July 2017

and finally My Hot Matches - no match notices since Mar 2016, not even 'there are no hot matches'.

Is the site slowly closing down?
