Candlemas, Sunday 29 January

Dear All

Hello

Hope you are okay.

This christian festival is usually held on 2 February but because the date falls midweek, most churches will hold the service on Sunday.

Mary and Joseph took their baby Jesus to the temple for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, commonly called Candlemas. This was 40 days after the birth of Jesus.

At the same time, Mary received the ritual purification.
This form still exists where new mothers go to a church to be blessed.

At church services today, people are given candles which are lit and a procession takes place, to represent Jesus bringing light into the world.

This is a prayer often said for this day:

"Grant, O Lord

to the weary, rest

to the longing, glimpse of hope fulfilled,
to the expectant, the promise of grace dawned

to the faithful, an honoured place

at the feast of your kingdom,

Bring us, O Lord
to rejoice in your salvation and glory
now and for ever.

Amen

If you are going to a service of any kind, travel safely.

Take gentle care
Very best wishes
EOS
