'X Factor''s Cher Lloyd and Shayne Ward set for new gypsy-themed show?
by Matt Glazebrook, Posted Feb 01, 2011

If there's one thing the British television viewing public love more than Simon Cowell-produced singing contests, it's fly-on-the-wall insights into the garish social institutions of the underprivileged.

It's no surprise, therefore, that plans are afoot to unite the twin TV phenomena of long-running talent spectacular 'The X Factor' and ethically-dubious traveller gawpfest 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' in one ratings-grabbing bonanza.

According to the Daily Star (via OMG Music), the producers of 'MBFGW' are lining up former 'X Factor' contestants Cher Lloyd and Shayne Ward for a show looking at celebrities with traveller backgrounds. Series seven contestant Lloyd's mother is of Romany descent while second series winner Ward's family are Irish Travellers.

"Viewers just can't get enough of the travellers and so it's no surprise that we're considering a show featuring celebrity gypsys," a Channel 4 insider was quoted by the Star.

Cutting Edge documentary series 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' has attracted as many as 7.5 million viewers, despite accusations that it propagates crude stereotypes about traveller culture. 'The X Factor', meanwhile, approached a 20 million audience for its most recent finale.

Other mooted celebs for the new show include actor Bob Hoskins -- who is of one-quarter Romanichal ancestry -- and singer/actor David Essex, whose mother was an Irish Traveller.
