Jean, me neither, it comes to us all lol.
Puss I hope they can sort out your dads pain very soon, and chemo is an option. They wouldnt offer it if they didnt think it would do any good, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it starts on monday. love to you all.

no change today , apart from mum breaking down i told dad she had a cold he nodded, he asked us to bring his car again and said he could go home in a very garbled way then went back to sleep, there is a strong possibility chemo is not happening nurse is grabbing doc in morning nurses cant believe no one has spoken to us yet !! , would anyone no why a psychiatrist has done a report i kinda saw it when nurse opened his file xx

walked in ward bay and dad was sat on chair but as we got closer his eyes just rolled back, he was the same, i spoke to the doctor who got him back into bed and he told us dad had hypercalcium (similar) too much calcium in the blood they are trying there best to bring it down ands we should see a difference tomorrow god i hope so my poor mum is falling to bits , he has a severe form of it at first they were treating it as confusion due to the morphine but when they reduced it there was no change , he told the doctor he was in hospital because he fell off his bike, the man in the next bed had fallen off his so he is taking in what is being said at least.

hi puss sorry to hear about your step dads confusion. but excuse my ignorance, but what causes excess of calcium in the blood and how is it only just now this has been noticed.i thought initially an overdose of morphine caused the problem as it would make more sense. hope they get to the bottom of it so the chemo can start asap.

Hi florence, to much calcium can be caused by already having some types of cancer, the cause is calcium leaking into the blood stream, they dide a blood test because they had managed to reduce the morphine and he was still sleepy and confused they have him on a drip flushing him and a a drug to reduce the calcium, it can also be a sighn of last stages of cancer i dont no if we should be complaining to anyone because they had found out just hope in time i hope he is better tomorrow or i dont no what to do but at least the consultant is going to explain more im just about to phone the ward now xxx thanks florence how are you xxx

Hope you wont mind me sharing my experiences with cancer in my family.

My dad now 70 was diagnosed with bowel cancer 4 years had 9 months of chemo and all was well

My step dad aged 64 was diagnosed with bowel cancer 18months also had chemo both intravenous (sorry know thats not right spelling) and tablet form for 9 months


well both have told in the last 4 weeks that it has come back my dads in his bowel and my stepdads in his bowel liver and lung, double whammy for us all.

On top of all that my SIL dad just diagnosed with lung cancer.

My stepdad is back on chemo started monday
my dad starts his later this month

They both have such positive attitudes and we all try to keep upbeat but it is a worry.

We are all going on holiday my mum, stepdad, dad , me and my husband for a week at the end of the month to spain, ( my dad and stepdad get on really well and we often go on holiday today , takes a bit of explaining when all my brothers and sister come too as we are from the two marriages)

Just wanted to share what was going on, its hard talking to family as we are going through the same thing, as im the oldest im the one they all phone and call on for support.

thanks puss for the explanation, before i had only heard of de calcification which is the opposite. hope he is improved tomorrow, im ok but waiting to go into hospital for another sinus operation, hopefully during oct hols.

welcome lorraine. wow you really have alot going on just now. so good that you all get on well together, at least you can be supportive to each other.staying positive if you can is good too as it keeps everyone in good spirits. you sound like me as the one that copes with everything and holds everyone together, but its ok sometimes to get it off your chest as you probably feel you have the world on your shoulders.

when this thread was started, it was intended for just that to chat amongst others in the same position as yourself and get help and advice if you need it.
we all need to let it out sometimes and our families are not always the best people as we are so close to them and dont want to upset them.

so feel free to come on here anytime.there are many of us in similar postions or have been through it and come out the other side always ready to listen

both my dad and step dad are positive people they both continued working during their last lot of chemo, dont know how they did that, but they just wanted normality i think, neither have told work they are back on chemo either,

I know the doctors say be careful of infections etc, but they just want normality for as long as possible i suppose and i admire them both for that.

I remember my dads last lot of chemo he had a pic line, we would take him the hospital to have the che mo and on the way home he would want to go in the pub for a pint lol. he accidently pulled the pic line out wallpapering the hallway, and had to go in overnight twice a month for the chemo he didnt


This time they are both on tablets and booster infusions once every 3 weeks, i know they felt quite ill for a day or t.wo after the booster, and my step dad still hasnt regained the feeling in his fingers and toes from the last lot.

well thanks for allowing me let off steam. as you can see by the hour i dont sleep well, will be like a zombie at work tomorrow.

4 months after l retired in 2007 l was diagnosed with breast cancer.
the lumpl had was on the outside of my breast low down and my doctor said it was nothing to do with the breast .
off l goes to the hospital and the specialist said the same gave me a mamagram and it came back clear .
he said come back in six weeks and l'll take the lump out for in day surgery.
there was a young doctor there who was in training and he asked if he could give me hand held scan cant remember the name of it you are in a daze.
it came possitive l had grade two non invasive cancer cells in my breast.
l had a mastectomy what else can you do.l had chemo which was not bad at all so if there is anyone out there going togo through it i was lucky it did not make me sick
and l had a fab wig so for everyone out there who is going through this terrible thing there is hope on the other side just try and stop possitive.
my hospital has a wonderful breast care and people go twice a month
for feel good nights it was not for me l felt this was my battle .another thing l found was that people i had known for years crossed the road or if they didn't they talked to where my breast should have been.
l think some people think if they talk to you they will catch it.

so pleased all your treatment went well, my dad and step dad, both on their lot of chemo, their symptoms seemed to get worse at the chemo went on, loss of taste, numb fingers and toes. no sickness though.

My mum had cervical cancer in 1980 diagnosed when my sister was 6 weeks old, 30 years on she is fine.

I think the most important thing is for anyone with any concerns or symptoms to go to their gps and dont let them fob you off demand the tests, better to be safe than sorry.

dad was no better today now they have said the stuff to reduce calcium takes a few days to work, and he may be like this cause he has infection, err thats what he went in for to treat infection with antibiotics via drip , the oncoligist is not answe3ring his bleep is this the truth i wonder tomorrow he is going to get a surprise visit , after i have spoken to his secdretary and found out where he is its time for answers, i asked to see the houseman today he said what more did we need to know !!!!!!!!!!!!, im having to rely on a man in next bed to dad to text me to see if there is any changex

just found out im being made to stay at home tomorrow, but im pleased its my brother taking my place , he will get answers !!! oh well hopefully will have some good news xx

where you not given a number for a support nurse? my stepfather and my SILs father both have been numbers they can call at anytime with questions or concerns they may have . maybe you could enquire next time you are at the hospital.

hi lorraine yes i have thanks just phoned now before i go to bed, im scared to actually go because i know if the phone rings thats it , i will go in a minute im so tired , he dosnt seem to be responding to anything i held his hand today as specky shaved him he was trying so hard to hold his head up im going now thankyou so much for caring xx

Hi Puss,so sorry your dad is so poorly, I thought it was the morphine that was confusing him, didnt know about the calcium.My mum was so confused with the morphine, best to just go along with whatever they say to you to as sometimes things can be said that can really upset ppl, but they dont know they are doing it. I hate to see or know of anyone suffering. Thats why I am thinking of you and what your family are going through.

Had a bit of good news stepdad started his chemo and blood tests show his liver function is normal, nice to have some positive news for a change,

Because the Chemo strips your immune system it would not be a good idea for him to start chemo with an infection, have they said what type of infection he has and how long he has had it ?

Sorry haven't been on for a while but have been having a bad run of things.

Puss, I was so sorry to hear your sdad had deteriorated, I will pray for you that all goes well. You must be so worried for him. It makes things worse when you can't get the info you need out of the specialists. I have the same problem from time to time. They never seem to want to directly answer your questions but will skirt around the issue trying to avoid it. Will be thinking of you xxxx.

My pain has been real bad this week, bones aching bowel and ovary issues and pain also. My codeine pills are no longer effectively relieving the pain so I have suffered this week. It is so upsetting and draining.
